IBM is acquiring Red Hat, a major distributor of open-source software and technology, in a deal valued around $34 billion, the companies announced on Sunday. According to a joint statement, IBM will pay cash to buy all shares in Red Hat at $190 each. Shares in Red Hat closed at $116.68 on Friday before the deal was announced. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/28/ibm-to-acquire-red-hat-in-deal- valued-at-34-billion.html

Maybe they will fire Poettering and finally put systemd, PulseAudio,
and Dbus in the bin.

Redhat, as all Linux distros, is GPL. This means that Centos (well they are now owned by REdhat) or anyone else can package and distribute Redhat without problem.

They can, but Red Hat was making it more difficult to do so until they came to some kind of agreement with CentOS, which made things much easier for CentOS. (I would have to go back and re-read exactly what the change was, but this happened a couple (three?) years ago. I'm guessing IBM could reverse the agreement made with CentOS. -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

I didn't realize that it had gone that far. I wonder if CentOS users should worry? -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

Yes, thy were trying to, in direct contravantion of the GPL, which explicity states that you cannot do anything to prevent someone from copying a GPL work. Putting in trademarked stuff and saying thatthat prevents you from copying the work IS such a prevention and removes RedHat's right to copy any of the GPL material. >

A future major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux will no longer support using KDE instead of the default GNOME desktop environment. Allegedly their users prefer GNOME. Suse Linux Enterprise 15 stinks with only Gnome desktop. Thankfully Leap 15 has alternatives like LXDE. Any chance one of the alternatives (Springdale, Fermi) would continue with KDE?
