I have a lot to learn about this SMB business. It sort of straddles the worlds between proprietary and open. Now I'm reading in the samba about kernel level cifs vfs which came about with kernel 2.5.42. I think those developers who like little embedded systems like older kernels to modify for their own purposes. You very likely correct that the degree to which the NGOS wants to support modern samba may be very incomplete. The samba article I see supports 'high levels' ie SMB 3 dialects. https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/LinuxCIFS "The CIFS VFS is a virtual file system for Linux to allow access to modern SMB3 servers (Windows, NetApp, EMC, Samba, Macs and Azure) as well as older servers and storage appliances compliant with the SNIA CIFS Specification version 1.0 or later. Popular older servers such as Samba 3, Windows 2000, Windows XP and many others supported CIFS by default, but modern servers and network appliances now support SMB3 or later. The CIFS VFS supports both. " -- Mike Easter

Yeah, i see that. Didn't think I snipped out that detail though.
If that is the case, the router in question is completely fubar.

Indeed, most people do. Most people I see run into that stumbling block
when they set up DynDNS or something, and then test from the LAN, and
get the router's config page ("OHNO, THIS IS OPEN TO THE INTERNET!!!!")

Reading elsewhere in netgear docs, netgear has more 'serious' NAS devices beyond the trivial USB 2 port on household routers. Those dedicated NAS devices do support samba 3 (and I guess 4) and higher levels of SMB 3. Netgear calls that ReadyNAS; they also call the storage on the AH router ReadyNAS, but I can't see which (old) v. of ReadyNAS it uses. The samba versions evolved to higher levels of SMB and Active Directory back in 2012 Dec (AD) and 2013 Oct (SMB 3). The latest firmware upgrade for AH's router is dated 2017 Jan, but its release notes are apparently only for a trivial admin pw alert fix, not anything related to some kind of big time upgrade of the NGOS capabilities. -- Mike Easter

I'm reading a netgear community webforum that says that the nighthawk series supports old samba 3.0.24 which is way back in 2007 and consistent with an old linux kernel about 2.4.33 and would not include SMB 2. And, I mistakenly referred to AH's router as having ReadyNAS. Netgear calls the USB support *ReadyShare* not NAS. Netgear community sez: "The ReadSHARE is a plain simple (and outdated, vulnerable, ...) SAMBA 3.0.24 serving SMB 1.0 protocol, and max ntlm auth security on all Nighthawk routers." -- Mike Easter

I _thank_ you for explaining the SMB situation where I _agree_ that SMB is a Microsoft anachronism, where, as you're aware, it's what the "ReadyShare" router does. The main problem, I found, with my ReadyShare is the _version_ of SMB, which, as you noted, may be a NGOS version of SMB, but which Windows 10 recognizes at version SMBv1. If I can find an "ac" router (since mine is only "n") that Windows (and iOS and Linux and Mac and Android) recognize as SMBv2/v3, that would _instantly_ resolve that SMB version issue: 1. Buy an "ac" router with a USB port & an SMBv2/v3 server 2. Put the "master" passwd.kdbx file on _that_ ReadyShare port 3. Access that passwd.kdbx from all platforms with an SMBv2/v3 client After a few hours of testing, I've found that even iOS has a (crippleware) free SMBv2 client, so it's possible to access the password from anywhere, which means that free SMB clients, even on iOS, exist. As for the Internet test, while I can always goof, I ensured that the cell phone WiFi (and Bluetooth, and NFC, but they really didn't matter) was turned off, and that cellular data was turned on, and that the whatismyipaddress returned an outside address. Note that I could (I think) have set up a password so that the ReadyShare Internet connection would require it - but for my testing - that didn't matter as the Internet is NOT what I want to enable - so simply leaving the router at the default disables any Internet access to the ReadyShare share. BTW, I read the chapter 5 (USB port) of the router manual, and, I clicked everywhere I could and even looked for a firmware update, but the router, being of circa 2012, doesn't seem to have a 'switch' to enable the jump from being perceived by Windows as SMB version 1 to version 2. (I could be wrong. But that's my results.) In summary, there are multiple solutions, each with pros & cons: o The most "general" solution, turns out to be a 24/7 Linux server o A "general" solution would be a router with USBv2 server support o In lieu of those solutions, Windows SMBv2 file copies, do work

Therefore, to me, it seems like a nice little rather easy project to select one of your old laptops with a dead battery (preferably not totally junk from a cpu/ram/gfx resource perspective) and make a linux server out of it, where the server's duties would be limited to the LAN so that you wouldn't have to get into the world of internet accessibility for it. You might find that it opens some LAN doors that would be quite useful besides this password and addressbook business. A linux server of that type could actually be done with very scant resources, but it would be easier for the less experienced linux/er if you have a more graphical and familiar environment. -- Mike Easter

I might be wrong about that. As an example, here's someone using Mint https://www.maketecheasier.com/setting-up-a-home-network-with-linux-mint/ Setting Up a Home Network with Linux Mint As a counter, here's a discussion about NOT using Mint as a server, but instead using Ub server v. https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1998883-how-make-file-server-in-ubuntu-or-linux-mint How make file server in ubuntu or Linux Mint (But) I think that those who are against such as Mint as a server are thinking about a more 'robust' server such as a webserver and LAMP as opposed to a simple LAN fileserver. -- Mike Easter

Not necessarily. I'm against it, because it adds "a decent graphics card" as a requirement. Not to mention you have to allot system resources to a DE thats going completely unused for 90% (or more) of the time the machine is on. Sure, if you have a single desktop that has to be your fileserver in addition to general-use PC, sure that changes things. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEzBAEBCAAdFiEEBcqaUD8uEzVNxUrujhHd8xJ5ooEFAlxOO7MACgkQjhHd8xJ5 ooGy8Qf+PXcFHzpAvFkKPpwgShzdxkNmh1ZQ3ETSjNUakcbfjqNvuS8RknZhA4Z1 2y9n83RUuT2bLNN6v5sgV0D4zS+d5Mbr1wF+kl6v5ySeVtigRVlbSYCKKHgffVIa xBl6wlfeVevW8VQuQAkYxqa2Z2P3UE/SKjPR9vzgvhKLXYzFJvyk+Noswir57qIp VbO1vurX3E7fcxINiIQp5Vn9tEZJp4bo01tmal8dzkmE8XXkFUOhTcLyskw/L03d 7S8s6bcKYwNWzPgHa83iCEF4uTGi53B9fDqBWAdQMjifHKnjejftoXS97FFUcrjP gJnqDb+zAmhh8cRG5lQ9Ce6GGW997A== =6ndA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- |_|O|_| |_|_|O| Github: https://github.com/dpurgert |O|O|O| PGP: 05CA 9A50 3F2E 1335 4DC5 4AEE 8E11 DDF3 1279 A281

My point was that I started using Linux back when it was no small feat
to get anything more than basic VGA out of your graphics card (i.e.
Gnome _worked_, but it was in 2d mode and other things).
At the time (a mere 15 years ago, give or take), one either got
themselves familiar with vi, or used a search engine to find an
alternative (such as nano). Very little of the "upper-end" admin work
had a GUI.
The main downside of the GUI is that you're gonna end up writing the
config file (and subsequently reading it) from the perspective of
whoever wrote the UI. It is my experience that when you give control
over to someone else, you're either not learning at all or you're
learning a potentially flawed approach. (e.g. the tool was written, and
abandoned but the internet still says it's alright).
By no means am I saying one cannot use a GUI, but that for the purposes
of learning how to work with the various server applications, you
SHOULD[1] edit the text files directly.
The (Debian, and children) default /etc/samba/smb.conf has pretty good
comments, about the only thing it's missing is an included "random
public directory example". But that's really easy to add,
0. create a backup copy of /etc/samba/smb.conf
cp -p smb.conf smb.backup
1. Create your public directory
sudo mkdir -p /srv/samba/public
2. Add the share to samba (just throw it at the tail end of the file)
[public]
comment = public anonymous access
path = /srv/samba/public
browsable = yes
create mask = 0660
directory mask = 0771
writable = yes
guest ok = yes
3. Save the config file, and test all's well
testparm
4. Assuming all was OK, reload samba
sudo /etc/init.d/samba reload (this'll just reload the config
file without restarting samba).
5. From your windows box, test it out
start -> run -> \\ip.of.samba.server
If you see the directory "public", all should be well -- good idea to
copy a file over, just to test. As an "anonymous" user, the file should
end up on the linux box as:
-rw-rw---- nobody nogroup [...] filename.ext

I remember writing a config file for XFree86 from scratch before I could get X running at all because BSDOS supplied only the example file. This included writing mode lines for the monitor. Fortunately I had experience designing a high-performance graphics card and specifying a custom monitor for it. When I switched to Linux a few years later X was a breeze by comparison. -- John Hasler jhasler@newsguy.com Dancing Horse Hill Elmwood, WI USA

My plan is to finish what I started, and then perhaps set up the server. The server I'd set up would be Ubuntu most likely (due to familiarity). The advantage would be clear: o CalDAV server o Samba server & smbclient o WebDAV server etc. If/when I set things up, I'll write out a tutorial, as usual, so as to give back to the team, and to leverage what is tested, & to learn from the comments, as always. Thanks.
