So, I would assume that the ISP *can* see the cleartext calls to the DNS servers that are set up in my router. Setting the DNS servers on your router servers a purpose so that you don't have to set them up on all computers, phones, tablets that connect to your network. Also, to be clear, I never said that dig proved a DNS leak. I did say (a few times) I need better Linux commands for debugging. I got the "dig" command from Marek. It tells us where the Ubuntu computer "thinks" it's getting the DNS from. And what dig tells us is that Ubuntu thinks it's getting DNS from the router. Which is exactly where we're getting the DNS from. I tried with all plugins turned off. I still can't turn off the DNS in the router. I even tried putting bogus DNS settings there but, of course, that ruined any chance of being on the Internet. I tried using EMPTY settings, but the router software wouldn't let me do that either. So, there seems to be no way I can NOT set the DNS in the router! I think we're defining the "dns leak" differently. You're talking about an "ip leak" interchangeably with a "dns leak". They are two totally different things. One would leak your real ip address (that's really really bad). The other would leak your dns server (that's just bad).

Would just one person on the entire Internet just run the simple cut

99% of this thread was about a silly miscommunication of what the word
"DNS Leak" means, with 0% of the thread being anyone who can just *see*
what the problem is.
Maybe *you* have the same problem?
Would someone (anyone) just cut and paste these simple 10 steps?
1. Please created a directory to put the ovpn files into:
$ mkdir ./freevpn/
2. Go to http://freevpn.me/accounts/ which will tell you the login/password:
OpenVPN Username: freevpnme
OpenVPN Password: cNliJi2D
3. Press the button titled "Download OpenVPN Certificate Bundle".
That should create ./freevpn/OpenVPN-Certificate-Bundle-Server1.zip
4. Unzip that bundle:
$ cd ./freevpn
$ unzip OpenVPN-Certificate-Bundle-Server1.zip
Archive: OpenVPN-Certificate-Bundle-Server1.zip
creating: OpenVPN-Certificate-Bundle-Server1/

NOTE: I had a problem with the FreeVPN.me-UDP-40000.ovpn file, so,
I suggest you use the exact file I used below!
5. Please run openvpn using one of those free configuration files:
$ cd ./OpenVPN-Certificate-Bundle-Server1/
6. Notice what IP address you will be assigned when you are on VPN:
$ grep ^remote FreeVPN.me-UDP-53.ovpn
remote 176.126.237.207 53
7. Now start VPN:
$ sudo openvpn --config FreeVPN.me-UDP-53.ovpn
Enter Auth Username: freevpnme
Enter Auth Password: cNliJi2D
... bunch of messages ... culminating in success ...
Initialization Sequence Completed
8. You can check that you are now on that assigned IP address:
$ curl http://myip.dnsomatic.com; echo
176.126.237.207
$ ping 74.125.239.36

9. Please run at least one of the DNS Leak tests below:
NOTE: DO not get hung up on the 'word' "DNS LEAK".
Just notice where your DNS queries are coming from!

$ firefox https://www.dnsleaktest.com
$ firefox http://dns-leak.com/
10. The question is only about what DNS servers show up!
Do you see DNS servers from the VPN provider?
Or do you see DNS servers set up in your router or by your ISP?
