I tell my router to give all devices that I own and consistently connect to my home network a static IP address. That's not to say that I give the device a fixed address, it means that my router's DHCP server knows to reserve a particular address and always assign it to that particular device when requested. The device is still set to ask for an address from DHCP, so it will still work when connected to other networks, but it will always get the same address on my own network. That would avoid your problem about changing addresses. I use that method for wireless portable devices like my phones, tablets, and laptops. The wired devices (desktop computers, smart TV, printer) are set with a fixed address outside the DHCP pool.)

If you haven't seen it you should check it out, though I am sure you are already aware of such scenarios.

Like the feature where the wpa2 works a bit like enterprise where each client get its own encryption key. I like hostapd. What did for the library is created a script that randomly pulls a new passphase from a dictionary file of ~900, updates hostapd.conf and restart the daemon. So each day their public wifi has a different password. The staff uses an internal webpage to get the new password for the day. The script is scheduled to run at closing time, so it has benefit of clearing the library of stragglers and they cannot log back in until the next day when they get the new password. Can post the script if anyone is interested. One issue I did have, I really should start my own thead: Some *Windows* clients, (mostly Win8.x but a few Win7), cannot seem to login in with a "Key mismatch error". ONLY Windows...not problem with Linux, Android, Mac OSX or IOS...just figgin Windows. Found a lot of posts describing the problem but no real answers. Anybody? I have read that Windows has problem when offering both CCMP and TKIP for wpa_pairwise but limiting to just CCMP didn't seem to help. -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com

Usually having Windows forget the WLAN is enough to get it to settle down. Otherwise, you can also go into the Windows Network-Manager and change the settings from "TKIP + AES" to "AES ONLY". Worst case is "make the changes and then reboot, because Windows is stupidly hanging onto the wrong details for whatever reason".

Yes, I have experienced variations of this. Also simple "renaming" the connection (local name) fails to actually update, so when I wanted to do so, since I have two WAN connections, it kept the old name, so I have to remember which is which now or actually look at the router I am on in 'properties' or such. Quite the PITA.

The TKIP ciphers have been broken, and > if you're serving 802.11n, it slows things down. My router is an old Dell Dimension that serves as our router and firewall, running Ubuntu server. I have a wireless card and using the hostapd package. It looks like to "AES ONLY" I need set just CCMP in the hostapd.conf wpa_pairwise=CCMP It is how my setup is at my home, so I will try it at the library and see if it helps there tomorrow. Not all Windows users have problems so it depends on who visits the library. All the library computers run Ubuntu... > > Since (IIRC) you're talking about a library environment ... and if > you're somewhere in the "3rd world" such that "availability of internet > to a personal household" is difficult to obtain for a reasonable cost > (say, practically anywhere in the USA outside of the Google-Fiber > cities), I can imagine that some patrons come to use the "free internet" > that they've paid for with their taxes. > > It might be a good idea then to work with the administration and force a > minimum acceptable settings --> e.g. 802.11n utilizing WPA+AES ciphers > (aka "WPA2" -- note that "WPA2 + TKIP" is actually a fallback / > compatibility mode to the original WPA standard [1]). Patrons have to get their card scanned and they get the password for the day from the librarian. Well if Verizon had fulfilled their promise for that fiber "Information Superhighway" they were supposed to build by '95 for all the *billions* they received to built it. Maybe I should meet my obligations in the same manner by paying just 1/3 of my bill twenty years from today, eh? -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com
