Funny you mention that, because I had a job at a software company when I was much younger, and they said that my instructions were costing them too much money in paper. They liked the instructions that fit on a single sheet of paper instead. Mine had *every* step outlined, and that meant that they had to revise it as the software interfaces changed willy nilly. My argument was that the customer deserved a step-by-step how to. In those days, we used Framemaker (maker interchange format) to write the help documents. I'm so glad those days are over. :)

You couldn't possibly hurt my feelings. I'd have to first value your opinion for that to happen and I don't value your opinion at all. I deleted the rest of this non sense. Stop making a simple task into a complex one. It is easy. Anyone using Linux can do this. Trolls, who knows. You guys lack any skills at all. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

The first problem was not knowing how the default Android Gallery on the S3 selected the entire folder in Bluetooth file transfer mode. This was solved, and the precise steps (which are *very* exact or it won't work) have been documented by me so others may follow. The second problem was to find a solution other than Bluetooth that worked, and the suggested freeware app Turbo Client works just fine (once you get over the learning hump). The payware you suggested would *still* have had a learning hump, so, how is it any better than the suggested freeware app that does the exact same thing? I don't know. But, at this point, the problem was solved in two ways: 1. The exact unintuitive steps to getting Bluetooth to do the job, and, 2. The exact steps to get the freeware Turbo CLient to do the job. I thank you for all your kind help and advice.

I think Marek has hit upon the best solution because a) the ssh server seems to already exist, and, b) all I want to do is xfer a bunch of files so SFTP should do it The suggested freeware, Turbo Client, should do the trick, and, it "says" it is transferring the files, but, when I run a find, it doesn't find the files. The way I run the find is the easy way though, as I didn't run the find . -name -print but just used the fast find feature of Linux: $ sudo updatedb; find known-file-name.jpg Perhaps the Turbo Client is sticking the file in some protected location?

Well, let's bear in mind that the original question was merely how to get Android bluetooth file transfer to select multiple files in one step. Then notice absolutely *none* of the answers were in that direction. All the answers (bar none!) were in the direction of setting up some Rube Goldberg-style software (including payware!) to transfer the files from Android to Linux. Again, remember, I just wanted to be able to select multiple files in one fell swoop. But, now I'm being asked to install wholly unrelated software (unrelated to bluetooth anyway) just to solve that bluetooth problem. So, it's not *me* making this a bigger job than I had asked. I'm simply faithfully testing out the suggested solutions that seem to make sense upon first inspection. So, far, what was suggested was (IIRC): 1. Add payware to transfer the files 2. Add freeware to transfer the files 3. Set up a file server on Linux I didn't ask for *any* of that (I simply asked for the Android bluetooth GUI for selecting multiple files), so, the fact that the job has morphed is only because I'm faithfully trying to follow the decent suggestions. The *only* viable suggestions are: a) Set up a KDE connection and transfer that way, or, b) Get any SSH SFTP client to work. So far, I've only tried one SSH SFTP freeware client and I haven't yet been able to learn how to set up the KDE connection server (but I am leery of setting up yet another server on Linux, especially since this task started out on Android only asking how to select multiple files in the Gallery Bluetooth Gui).

You'd think the GUI would explain that it is the LINUX server setup that it's asking about, but, I guess anyone using that app is *supposed* to already know which is the server and which is the client. In this case, what you said was that the app is asking for how the Linux FTP server is *already* set up. In this case, the Linux FTP server doesn't exist, so, now I see why it's impossible for me to answer those questions. I've said already that I would rather not create another server on my Linux laptop just to copy a bunch of pictures over - because ... a) There must be an easier more straightforward way, and, b) Every server is a security hole requiring due diligence. I think the best two suggestions, to date, are: 1. Use KDE connect (although that might be yet another server), or, 2. Use an SSH SFTP client (which seems to have the most promise without setting up a *new* server on the Linux laptop).

I figured it all out and used Turbo Client to quickly transfer a few hundred photos as a test case. Once you get the bare-bones and highly inconsistent GUI figured out, the thing works quite well! Having file names constantly change case is odd, and unforgivable, but, if you simply ignore all file casing and if you get over the fact there are more than a half dozen DCIM directories scattered about, and if you finally manage to navigate without wiping out everything you've done to date, it's nice and fast. Thanks!

ES File Explorer has a decent SFTP client, too. You could have (still could!) use that. I use it all the time for the same reason you do, to transfer music and picture files between my phone and PC. I was confused before when you said you planned to transfer files via SSH. I guess you meant SFTP. I'm surprised that your laptop had a working SFTP server installed and running by default. SFTP is akin to FTP and both carry some (but not a lot of) security risk, as both can allow other people access to your computer. SFTP is more secure because the connection is encrypted. If I were you I'd do what I suggested before: enable the SFTP server when you need to transfer some files and then disable it when you aren't using it.

I agree with you that I meant SFTP (I really wasn't sure of *what* I wanted as I just wanted files to go over en masse). I do use VPN quite a lot, so, I do have openVPN installed, so, maybe (I didn't check) that's where the SFTP server came from. I really don't know *where* it came from, but, I was glad not to have to set up yet another server on Linux. > I'd do what I suggested > before: enable the SFTP server when you need to transfer some files and > then disable it when you aren't using it. That's a good idea, but, at the moment, I don't even know what the server is called. Running a ps -auxww and then grepping for ftp finds nothing running; however, grepping for "ssh" nets "/usr/sbin/sshd -D" running by root.

Might've been an accidental install (e.g. you wanted openssh-client, but grabbed openssh-server instead). >> I'd do what I suggested >> before: enable the SFTP server when you need to transfer some files and >> then disable it when you aren't using it. > > That's a good idea, but, at the moment, I don't even know what the server > is called. That said, as long as you're behind a firewall (i.e. at home) it doesn't matter so much that it's running. If you're concerned about it (e.g. while out on vacation or untrusted wifi), then you can create/edit /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny to effectively blacklist everything except your devices (note that depending on your environment you might not be able to do this). Another option is editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config to only allow key-based access to your machine. Will mean that you've got to generate yourself a SSH key, and put the PRIVATE KEY on devices that you want to use to connect to the server. Personally, I have two for my server -- an ultimately trusted one used on hosts that I trust (i.e. linux boxen), and a mostly trusted one that I use for devices I cannot ultimately trust (e.g. Windows boxen, my phone, etc.)

He showed an internal IP address of 192.168.x.x and he'd be using SSH, which is encrypted. So it is a private network, and encrypted. I'd say that this is more than enough. That's more secure than any SMB traffic floating around on an internal network. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

Actually, you can easily set up the phone as an SSH server and just
point and click mount your phone from Linux. Then what's on the phone
just looks like any other folder.

The phone was mounted as two mount points (one for the SD card and the other for the internal memory) on Linux.

Turbo Client is an extremely unpolished GUI, which is unforgiving of mistakes, but it's fast and efficient once you're over the learning curve. The learning curve has *nothing* to do with the process; it has everything to do with the unpolished GUI. However, once you're past that learning curve, the thing is fast, and efficient, which, pretty much, is the most you can hope for. Thanks!
