I still build and own full size "desktop" PCs as well, and completely
agree, but laptops have these things called 'docking stations' now,
which make a powerful laptop into a desktop device in a pretty robust
way. I do not have one, but I may on my next laptop.

I bought an acer early last year - good computer, fast etc, Mate 14.04 but
they also removed the caplock indicator - maybe it's part of a trend? But I
agree - pain in the ass for console work

I failed typing at high school at 9 WPM - but now (many decades later) I can
type with 10 fingers faster than I can scribble with my hands, - almost as
fast as I can think, and be a lot more coherant at the same time!! :)

At work we are a Lenovo shop so I get to see quite a few.
It's the XXXs types that have the sucky screen, apparently they are more
energy efficient.

Like my (company) T430s has one and when in Win7 I have to set the task
bar to 'Hide' for Outlook calender to display all entries.
With the task bar in sight the calender will hide most entries ???

Colleagues with the T430 don't have this problem

In Kubuntu I've moved the taskbar (Panel) to the left, much better for a
wide screen.

12GB RAM... Hard to pass up. Seems like a really good deal.

Only a 5400 rpm drive though. Stick a Seagate Hybrid in there for
super fast performance while still retaining capacity.

HP is typically very Linux friendly, both hardware and corporate
structure-wise.

That one looks like it would absolutely be no problem, but I cannot say
for sure. They may have a support forum where such a question would get
answered pretty quickly.

This user doesn't seem to agree:
"I bought a new HP notebook (...), which gave me a lot of trouble when
trying to set it up with UEFI and GNU/Linux. The notebook just did not
want to boot my favourite GNU/Linux distribution, Arch Linux, although
everything was installed and configured correctly. It took me quite a
while to understand HP's rather stupid implementation of UEFI. While
investigating that issue, I found that quite a lot people had similar
problems with their HP notebooks (although different models). So this
seems to affect all kinds of HP notebooks. This section covers

Yeah, not a fan of HP. Dell is okay on their XPS series *IF* you are
careful and use their customize feature to select things like intel
WiFi. But even if you don't you can run over to NewEgg and buy 2x2 WiFi
cards for your laptop. I found the 7250 and I think the 6200 and bought
a bunch of them. FreeBSD works with the intel 6200 series and more
modern versions of Linux work well with the Intel 7250. So far every XPS
I have tried to install Linux wasn't difficult at all as a result.

The Lenovo T450 I bought was simple as well. Same basic issue. Just
check the WiFi. Typically if you have a broadcom it is a pain and if you
can use an intel you'll be better off.

And for towers, if you build it, I doubt you have any trouble at all.
MSI, Gigabyte, Intel, ASROCK and so on all work well with Linux or
FreeBSD.

I had one recent laptop (IIRC, Toshiba Satellite) that made it hard. It
wouldn't boot Ubuntu until I turned on "legacy boot" and reformatted the
HD as MBR.

How would just one have worked? This PC came with a GPT disk.

IIRC:

1. Without any changes, this PC would not boot from the Ubuntu DVD.

2. I turned off "secure boot". It still wouldn't work.

3. I turned on "legacy boot". The DVD would now boot.

4. I installed Ubuntu. The hard disk would not boot.

5. I now reformatted the HD (500GB) to use MBR, and re-installed. Ubuntu
now boots.

Are you saying you would have done it differently?
