Absolutely, that's how we get most everything. And Canonical needs to break even or make a profit. They do a lot of good work. I mention Juju because RED HAT had to buy Ansible for $150 million to jump-start competition over Juju created by Canonical which is already very popular. Canonical is truly a force in Cloud. They got in early on and they have been a leading force. I also believe Canonical likely got a lot of people to consider Linux on the desktop. Not saying they are the first, but they did make a very friendly Linux for the desktop and made it popular. I actually like what Canonical does. I appreciate that they even took a stab at making a phone and a tablet at all. I want a Linux phone and tablet. I doubt Red Hat will ever give me one. Someone needs to at least start such a thing to get it going and Canonical has done that. I just wish they'd really commit some heavy resources to it. This is a product I very much want to have. >> Ubuntu ain't doing it whether on phones or computers. > > For phone you have a point, not sure about computers. > >> >> Besides, if he focuses on users he gets users such as me who call him >> out on the bullsnit he spews. Mark might not always be a 'nice' person, I specifically think of his alterations with Jonathan Riddell. I appreciate he has to make money out of this venture but I don't believe it's going to be easier by upsetting the lead man of what started as the 'other' Ubuntu distro. And it's already many years ago the Nokia n900 was a very promising Linux phone so I dearly hope the Ubuntu one becomes an example for other developers on how to get free of the Google stable.

I like that you mentioned Google. See I don't want Google watching me. I'd rather have an iPhone that have Google watching me. Apple didn't give us a file system within the phone though. They appear to have a semi functional work around where App A can save a file to DropBox and app B can see drop box, and so you have a pseudo file system repo. Not perfect, but it's better than nothing. I like the way Android just has a file system. If Apple did that I'd be all over it. Ultimately I want an open source phone. I don't want Google watching me and I don't want the closed nature of Apple. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

Well, I appreciate Red Hat as well. Though that is an unpopular thing to
say. But they did buy ceph and other cloud related startups for hundreds
of millions and then gave it all to open source. Some will knock them
for things they've done a decade ago. I wasn't there. What I see them
doing day impresses me. And I mean that seriously. I am very impressed
with them. I could easily switch to CentOS and pay nothing. But I still
pay for annual subscriptions, now in my second year and I am fine with
it. The few times I did need support they went above and beyond working
with me until the problems were solved. Lots of back and forth emails,
sending files, escalating my issue and just, bang bang bang, getting it
done to my satisfaction. I'm on self support but no body cared. They
just solve my problem when I have one.
Canonical also has paid support. I am sure they'd likely do the same. I
like paid support. I like knowing that if I have an issue there is
someone I can talk to who can fix it.

Thank you. I don't agree too much with disparaging Ubuntu here. Others
are free to do as they please. It's not moderated so that is going to
happen. But I'd rather make progress on learning and/or sharing things
I've learned than waste my time being negative. Believe me, I'm all
happy because I found a new command, fold, and got some use out of it in
my script. I'd rather talk about the fold command. Maybe someone else
could benefit from it. Maybe someone will clue me in on some cool
commands I can use. That's the kind of posts I want to read.
At this point when I come in here it says 25 new posts, but then my
score file kicks in and knocks that down to 4 new posts. 21 will be
killed because there is more negativity than content. It's a waste of
effort. Screaming about Ubuntu here accomplishes nothing. As I have said
before. I'm not an advocate, I'm a user. I'm not here to convince anyone
to switch to Linux, Ubuntu, Red Hat, etc. I'm here to pick the smart
people's brains and benefit from their experience. And I am more than
happy to pay it forward when and if I can.
You know what makes me smile today? I've spent all day changing my
habit from hitting the escape key in Vim to instead using just ctrl-{
which puts me back in normal mode from insert mode. And I am retraining
myself to switch back to normal mode as soon as I am done typing, and
then using nothing but hjkl to move around. That's the kind of geek
stuff I like and get excited over. I'm still enjoying Vim. I'd rather
talk about that then be negative.
negative people tend to stay negative and attract others whom are also
negative. It's not an accomplishment. It's not going to teach me
anything of value.

I was there and it felt like the biggest betrayal when they essentially
closed off RH proper and made it Enterprise. My original training was on
RH; have never used it since. Although, I do still absolutely love CentOS.

Agreed, and I have absolutely no issue with RH's business model now with
paid support. I'm fully on board with paying for good work. Just not
sure why they needed to essentially close off the distro to the
community? They could have left it like Canonical, have only one OS,
allow anyone to download/install the OS free of charge and have anyone
who wants/needs support to pay for it. That would have be fine and the
community wouldn't have come down on them so badly.

Ctrl+c works too. Many of my colleagues (who still use nano) would
always use as an excuse that they hated vim because Esc was too
unnatural and would force your hands off the keyboard's home row, didn't
know about either key combination. No more excuses ;)

Agreed. And thanks again for all you share and add to this NG.

Practically, yes.

No /major/ differences, but Kubuntu proper is a bit more "tailored"
toward the use of KDE as a desktop environment. In other words, it may
contain more additional KDE-specific utilities and artwork, and perhaps
─ but this I do not know for certain ─ also a lit less emphasis on GTK-
specific tools. (GTK is the widget library set used by GNOME, Unity,
XFCE and LXDE.)
In overall, I would say that Kubuntu is a bit more "integrated" on
account of KDE-specific software than Ubuntu with KDE added on.

In <n7q1cd$m98$1@dont-email.me> Aragorn: [Snip...] > I would say that Kubuntu is a bit more "integrated" +1 I find it most convenient to order a Kubuntu pre-packaged from a reputable distributor, than muck around with "upgrading" a basic server install (or another DE like Unity) to a KDE environment. It's what I plan to do when 16.04 LTS is released this spring. I think it's worth the modest cost if you're interested in getting on with using a desktop environment, rather than tinkering. :) FWIW, I'm very satisfied with this vendor, years now: https://www.osdisc.com/products/kubuntu -- Regards, Weird (Harold Stevens) * IMPORTANT EMAIL INFO FOLLOWS * Pardon any bogus email addresses (wookie) in place for spambots. With Kubuntu you do not have any of the GNOME/Unity duplicate components. And there is no extra step of install another DE. -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com
