"The 'commercial' search app, which combines product data from Amazon
with data from your desktop and phone, is to be turned off by default in
16.04 LTS in April and in Unity 7 and 8."

It's! ABOUT! TIME!!!

[I always avoid this by NOT using 'Unity']

After 4 years of spyware? Yes, it's about time.

Your crusade to saving everyone's souls from using Ubuntu must be
getting tiring, no? Especially one that's been a non-issue since day 2
of this "spyware" nonsense.

It's only nonsense if you don't believe in freedom and my 'crusade'
isn't about any one thing. There have been more than plenty 'things'.

That said, I don't actually dissuade anyone from using Ubuntu if they
can stomach it (knowing what its developers have been up to), but only
attempt to both instruct and provide an easy to use alternative
(Debian) without the personal Shuttleworth ego baggage which Ubuntu
carries.

I see that ATT have embraced Ubuntu and think that's a good thing when
seen as opposed to embracing Microsoft.

I can't say that embracing Debian wouldn't have been better, but they
were looking for purchased support. How could I fault them (or Ubuntu)
for that?

It's nonsense because people were talking about (and showing) how to
turn it off even before it came out.

I believe in freedom.

Are you sure you don't work in PR?

Had it not been for the controversy the Great Unwashed would have been
none the wiser about just how their searches were being used.
Something such as that should be opt in, not opt out. Otherwise,
spyware.

I probably could but there's not enough money. ...anywhere.

Right so, it was easy enough to do it yourself, like easier than to
switch off the 'Transmissions' in Win10 but it was the wrong way around.

At the same time it was another reason to use an alternative DE like
Kubuntu.

exactly, "not unity" was the workaround, pretty simple. I think it's
why people frowned but didn't go bat-shit-nutz over it.

No, just simply click from On to Off for Online Search was all that was
needed. Was that so hard?

Apparently for Cybe it was, he even thought it was secret, hence
'spyware'. Nonsense.

Not reading for content yet? I never thought it to be secret, only
secretive. There wasn't much notice about the intrusive nature of the
beast.

Er, maybe not initially by Canonical. But the main culprit for all this
mess (at least initially) was called 'unity-lens-shopping'. So, maybe a
little "buyer beware". ¯¯\_(°_°)_/¯¯

If I remember correctly the 'shopping lens' and the furor it began,
particularly after $huttleworth's outright refusal to listen to those
wishing the simple change to opt-in, led to the biggest desertion yet
from Ubuntu desktop.

That efffect can be seen in the numbers here:
<https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/>
on the ubuntu-useers mailing list archive.

I agree about shuttleworth being a dick at times, but "biggest
desertion"? Sorry I don't see it.

You may be a PR expert in another life, but in this one, you ain't no
data scientist. I see no correlation from the numbers you're drawing
inference from there.

And worse, you drawing any correlation between the numbers from a
mailing list to those of people actually using Ubuntu desktop (or
server) over all! Could be trends to forums or other such Ubuntu help
sites. Shame shame.

A simple chronological trend review of distrowatch standings shows it
clearly as well.

I had Unity when I installed 13.10, and hated it.
I wonder if it's better now?

Does Unity still fail in the simplest of things?

For example, does the new Unity still fail to put the window controls
on the top right corner of full-sized windows (where it is set on the
smaller windows)?

Does the new Unity still fail to distinguish between a Firefox icon
and a (very different) Tor Browser Bundle Firefox icon?

Does the new Unity still lack the simplest concepts, such as cascaded
menus?

Does the user still need to constantly click numerous times on the
icons just to find the "right" opened window when multiple windows
of the same application are open at the same time?

Did the new Unity introduce *new* annoyances?

"fail" for some, "different" for others.

Yes. And the reason is CONTINUITY. When the window is maximized the
controls on the right would interfere with the indicators. To have to
controls bounce from right to left and left to right is bad
design...bouncing controls hither and yon smacks of another OS's
experiment with UI change.

>
> Does the new Unity still fail to distinguish between a Firefox icon

Might. But that more has to to do with the packaging of Tor. But of
course you could always make a custom shortcut, .desktop file.

>
> Does the new Unity still lack the simplest concepts, such as cascaded
> menus?

Yes, because it is contrary to the design. It is like saying does that
boat still lack wheels? Both UI paradigms get you from point A to point
B but just with a different approach to get there. If you MUST have
menus then Unity is not your desktop. Luckily you are not stuck with it,
you have a choice.

>
> Does the user still need to constantly click numerous times on the

Numerous times? No. You click ONCE and the multiple windows EXPOSÉ
layout. Pick the one you want.

>

"*new* annoyances" That very subjective. Personally I have found
workflow considerably more efficient with Unity than GNOME2
menu-oriented UI. But 1) you DO have to change how you work, 2) learn
the interface (BTW) you had to that with GNOME2).

Ever see someone type like a typewriter with a word-processor? Is the
typewriter more efficient? Well if one insists on multiple spaces and
hard carriage returns at the 72nd character then the advantages of
word-processor will not be apparent. So if you are a typewriter-type of
guy then stick with Xubuntu to Lubuntu. You have options.
