You (and apparently the people who followed up) missed the point.
Are you thinking that some shell interprets the #! line? I don't
think so. See the execve man page and read the first 5 lines of the
description and then the "Interpreter scripts" section.

In short, when some program (which could be your shell, but could be
some other program) asks the OS to execute a program P, the OS (not your
shell, not /bin/sh, not bash, ...) looks at the executable file and if
it starts with #! the OS (attempts to) execute the file (immediately)
following the #!, with any args given on the #! line, and then the
name of the file containing P.

That was your point.
Another point (mine) was that your assumption that the shell has
something to do with the interpretation of the #! line was wrong.

As others have mentioned, that is not true. Perhaps you are
misinterpreting what "." means. It means "the directory you are
currently cd'ed to", not "the directory which some file with a
pathname starting with '.' lives in".
So if in my current directory I have a file "try-aaa" that starts with
#! ./aaa
and, if in that very same directory, I have an executable program
called aaa, then I can successfully run
try-aaa
But if I cd (say) up one level
cd
and then try to execute
that-sub-dir/try-aaa
it won't work, since (from where I am right now) there is no such file
as "./aaa".

The only reason we need different userids, and all the authorization and locking complexity inherent in a multi-user system (two or more users logged on at once), is to keep people from trashing each other's files, or from trashing system files. If each user has a USB stick that contains all of his data and applications, and that "volume" is sandboxed from the "system", things become a great deal simpler. Imagine a setup where everything you need is on a USB stick, all your personal data and all the applications you've collected, modified, or built from scratch are on it. Insert it in your friend's USB port, and it's just like being at home, even if your friend is running Windows or Mac-OS or whatever else he may prefer. Only instead of a USB stick, ol's MS will hold your data in their cloud and you will log into your subscription of MS Desktop, independent of the hardware. Win-win for MS: guaranteed revenue stream and they got your data as leverage. No thanks! Sounds like what Scott McNealy was doing with the JavaDesktop on Sun a ways back. Not exactly sure what it was called so perhaps someone else might remember. Scott did a demo of it so there might be a video on YouTube of it. Basically he had an ID card he would plug into a Sun system and it would log that user in. They'd have their desktop, their apps, etc. Microsoft also has the whole concept of roaming profiles. And of course there is the terminal server. I don't see this being all that different from our own Home directories. Each user gets their own home dir and change change their background, etc. The difference is we're doing all this on the local machine. You're not carrying it around with you on the USB drive, but I'd imagine that could be modified to work with your own USB drive perhaps with automount and a little path trickery to get it on your USB. You could plug in the USB drive, login and then the act of logging it would have set your home to the USB drive. You logout, and then disconnect the USB drive. Don't know if that makes sense. Today though the USB drives are getting so large, like 128 GBs is enough to just hold an entire Linux system and you'd just plug that into a PC and boot off it. Wish I could find the Scott McNealy demo. He had it right a long time ago. I liked Sun. They did a lot of good things.
