I voted Debian. Why not use the father instead of the child?

Interestingly. Debian-based distros outnumber all others.

youens has'ta start with a gud resipee."

I voted SolydX (other).

Yes, it is based on Jessie. In fact, right now they are calling the
current releases SolydX 8.2 and SolydK 8.2 to keep with Jessie's
point release.

$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://repository.solydxk.com/ solydxk main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free

           deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-backports main contrib non-free
           deb ftp://ftp.deb-multimedia.org jessie main non-free

The DMO repo is not installed by default. I added it. The solydxk repo
only has around 350 packages. Mainly for branding, tweaks and icon themes.
Also, a few programs like a software manager, usb creator, iso constructor,
device driver manager and some others.

  Hey, Cybe...

Does debian have anything like Ubuntu "software updater"? A GUI based
apt front end thingy?

Not that I can't go from cli, I was just wondering.

8.2 sid is working great, btw.

  My favorites are:

 sudo apt-get install xscreensaver

(from sid non-free repo) and xscreensaver-data, and -data-extras, and
-gl, and -gl-extras and -screensaver-BSOD (all prefaced with
"xscreensaver" before the dash, of course)

Would synaptic work for you? It's what I use.

gnome-packagekit? (I've not tried it)
PackageKit allows performing simple software management tasks over a
DBus interface e.g. refreshing the cache, updating, installing and
removing software packages or searching for multimedia codecs and file
  handlers.

KDE's Muon Updater? (I've not tried it)

smartpm? (I've not tried it)
The Smart Package Manager project has the ambitious objective of
creating smart and portable algorithms for solving adequately the
problem of managing software upgrading and installation. This tool
works in all major distributions (APT, APT-RPM, YUM, URPMI, etc).

Local package installation?? Try stow (I've not tried it):
GNU Stow is a software installation manager for /usr/local. Using
symbolic links, GNU Stow helps you keep the installations separate
(/usr/local/stow/emacs vs. /usr/local/stow/perl, for example) while
maintaining the illusion that they are all under /usr/local.

Dizzy and webcollage are nice, too, as are the unicode screensaver,
termsaver and aajm.

If you like screensavers as I do, you might try rss-glx. It
integrates with xscreensaver very well:
rss-glx is a GLX port of the Really Slick Screensavers collection by
Terry Welsh (http://www.reallyslick.com/). Also included are several
other OpenGL screensavers ported from other platforms.

The screensavers can either be run as stand-alone applications or get
integrated into XScreenSaver's list of active screensavers. More
information about using these with xscreensaver can be found in
  /usr/share/doc/rss-glx.

Screensavers included in this package are: Biof, Busy Spheres,
Colorfire, Cyclone, Drempels, Euphoria, Feedback, Fieldlines, Flocks,
Flux, Helios, Hufo's Smoke, Hufo's Tunnel, Hyperspace, Lattice, Lorenz
Attractor, MatrixView, Plasma, Pixel City, Skyrocket, Solarwinds,
  SpirographX, and Sundancer2.

I love fractals and mathematica stuff.

From my OS which shall not be named, I run G-Force, which is a
visualizer for media player, but the platinum version also has a
screensaver. It is very cool, and runs fractal stuff, but allows you to
slide your image files in behind it (in false colors of course).

I was just wanting the aspect of the ubu software upgrader which
allows one to select the proprietary NVidia driver. I could put it in
manually (scoff), but it stays maintained that (ubu) way.

  Thanks for the tips.

I think the package you want is nvidia-kernel-dkms

saves you form needing to reboot-compile-reboot when a new kernel comes.

Perhaps you'll notice that he's asking about Debian, an undoubtedly
unknown quantity to him here in this Ubuntu group. I, OTOH, am fairly
well-versed in Debian and understand that most everything available in
Ubuntu is also available in Debian. I politely imparted that knowledge
with no desire for recompense nor recognition. That's the way the
community works.

Your attempt to change this into some oddball search for difficulty
in use where none exists is doomed, much as you are, to fail.

He's stated that he's used Linux since the 90's, yet asks stupid shit like
that?

Then post his favourite CLI command... installing screensavers!... LOL.

He's either a complete idiot, or was just trolling.

You're a goddamned idiot. I was compiling nvidia drivers before you
knew how to wipe your ass.

My question was related to the fact that on my ubu install, the
'software updater' which I rarely use had the capacity to install the
nvidia proprietary driver and it worked.

So, in my recent debian installation, I knew that such an ubuntu
applet would not be there and merely asked someone I knew would know
right off.

You are even more pathetic than mike, chump.

You are the idiot, little boy.

Most anyone can install xscreensaver. Then most wonder why some of
them are grayed out.

I merely posted the entire list, which installs them all, including
the one not seen in a while BSOD.

Again, you are even more retarded than mike is.

Why don't you demonstrate how to "compile" nvidia drivers?
Try not to SNIP this.

Yeah, that wasn't part of your question.
Can't comprehend what you write?

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.

I don't know mike.

OK, leprechaun.

Most being you.
Linux users know how to list the xscreensaver packages.

You were desperate to post something, so you posted that.
Most n00bs did that in the first few weeks, not after 18 years.

Everyone is retarded.

I've already wiped once.
I'll have wiped 100 times before you're done googling for an answer :)

Maybe just post a link to the source code so I can compile them too.

I know how to run the install script for the precompiled drivers, so don't
bother posting that.

I was downstairs eating some fish, you retarded fuck.

Maybe you should learn how to find it yourself.

They are not precompiled, idiot. The self installer compiles on the
fly when you run it.
