Maybe your programming prowess will allow you to see how the app's author decided to manage the setting for each screensaver that is included gets stored.

The impression I get is people first install Ubuntu, then move on to either Mint or Debian. Ubuntu was first a few years ago, probably due to widespread media propaganda, but when the datamining leaked and people mastered Linux it plummeted. Safest ? I have no idea. I use XP SP3 Pro under Debian/LXDE VirtualBox. All my debugging stuff (Ollydbg, registry and file monitors, hex editor, disassembler etc) works fine in XP, and I can roll back to a clean image when I'm done. I have Wireshark running in Linux to catch any interesting traffic, but there is no data to "steal" in the virtual image. If I update my hardware, I'll possibly install a virtual Win 7.
