WiFi is fine.
I just want to get the pictures over to the Linux laptop.
The only thing that won't work is USB because the port is broken.

FTP will work. Only that means the Linux laptop needs to be an
FTP server, right?

I already had ES File Explorer, but not ES File Manager, but when I
google, they seem to be the same thing, from ES App Group.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en
They called it the "ES File Explorer Manager", so I presume it's the same.

1. I started ES File Explorer and a bunch of blue folders show up
2. I hit the hardwired three lines on the phone body
3. I get a menu titled "Fast Access" with "Network" listed
4. I press "Network" and 4 options show, one of which is FTP
5. I press "FTP"; nothing happens but it says Add a server by New>Server
6. I hit the "+" sign for "New" and then "ftp" out of the list
7. A "New FTP Server" form shows up with the options:
Server =
Port = 21
Mode = passive
Username =
Password =
anonymous =
encoding =
display as =

I hit the cancel button because I think that is setting up the *phone*
as the FTP server. But don't I want the laptop to be the ftp server to
*put* the files to?

BTW, I'm familiar with FTP, which I haven't used in a decade or so,
but we used to use it all the time as follows:
ftp fardomain.com 21
(we normally entered a password for user@mydomain)
cd /path/on/ftp/server
binary
get filename
put filename
quit

I'm sure that I can make Linux either a client or a server, but, what
does FTP have to do with WiFi? Can't I just copy over WiFi like I do
with a cable?

Yes. They are on the same network, via a home broadband router.

I never thought of making the laptop a WiFi hotspot, and don't yet know
how to do that, nor if it's needed (since bluetooth works without it).

Moving forward, I start ES File Explorer Manager (I don't know
how to tell you what version it is).

1. I go to the LAN screen.
2. I press the "New" (plus) button.
3. A "Server" form comes up asking:
Domain = (blank)
Server = (blank)
Username = (blank)
Password = (blank)
[ ]Anonymous
Display as = (blank)

I'm not sure what to put in some of those fields:
a. I left the domain name empty (wouldn't know what to put there anyway)
b. For the "Server", I ran ifconfig on the Linux laptop, which came
up with 192.168.1.5 as the laptop IP address, so I put:
Server = 192.168.1.5/tmp
c. I'm not sure if I'm setting up the *phone* or the *laptop* as the
server, so, the next question was "Username" & "Password" but for what?
Is that for the phone?
It also allowed "Anonymous" but again, is that for the phone or the
laptop?

So I put my "real" linux login & password on the Android app
(I hope that was what it wanted, but I couldn't tell).

It said "Adding server" (please wait a minute", and then it said
"Error could not find server".

Of course, my laptop is not set up, by default, to be an FTP
server, so, did I miss a step?

You missed that last step. ES File Explorer doesn't see a running FTP
server at the address you specified, which is the Linux laptop, thus
the error message. You need to get the server on the laptop running
first.

How about Dropbox or other similar cloud service for transferring the
files? There's are Dropbox clients for Android (ES File Explorer, for
one,) and I suppose there's a Linux one, too.

Thanks for the advice, Nil, as I don't want to set up another server on
the Linux laptop if I don't have to (because, as I said, each server
opens up another security can of worms).

I know there are locally administered LAN-only dropbox style server/
client combos, but I'm not an administrative wiz kid (which you can
probably figure out without me saying that), so I don't want to set up a
local dropbox zone just to xfer pictures that I can already transfer by
bluetooth with the exception that I do it by individual files.

Likewise, the overhead and security issues with using the Internet to
simply xfer pictures from a phone that is inches away from a laptop is a
Rube Goldberg solution. Sure, it would work. But, it's like that
Mousetrap game we played as kids. Too much motion in the wrong direction
just to get a file to move a few inches in the right direction.

I think, at the moment, the most promising solutions are:
a) Figure out how to get bluetooth to move folders, (best)
b) Figure out how to easily transfer by wifi (second best)
c) Use a Rube Goldberg solution (worst).

You could use Sync by BitTorrent.

Thanks Caver1 for the idea.
Pretty much I figured out the extremely inflexible GUI for the previously
suggested "Turbo Client" which uses SFTP to my existing Linux server (I
guess I had an SFTP server all along, unbeknownst to me).

I wrote up a tutorial so that the *next* person doesn't have to shoot
around, and, as Marek stated, it's easy (but as Marek doesn't know
because he never tried the app), the app is *extremely* sensitive to the
wrong button press (it just wipes out everything, with nary a warning).

Once I got Turbo Client SFTP working, that solved my problem, thanks to
the help here.

Turbo Client apparently uses my WiFi router as the go-between, which is
fine by me. I don't know yet whether it will accept hostnames, so, at the
moment I'm using the hard-coded DHCP address of the laptop, which will
change over time.

So I'm 47 now. When I was about 9 years old I got started basically
playing with an Apple ][, then later a VIC 20 and even later a Commodore
64. Maybe around 1984 when the IBM PCjr hit I got to play on one of
those in my high school, which is odd because I went to a trade school,
but for some reason they think I'm gifted in mathematics. I am not, but
whatever. Rather than traditional math they opted instead to let me help
build a computer lab for credit and they promised to teach me APL, which
they never did. :(

Anyway, I started assembling clones from parts early on and by early
1990s I probably built hundreds of PCs. By around 1994 I decided to get
certified in NetWare, which was a network operating system. I knew all
about my own computer, but nothing about networking them together. That
wasn't my role in helping with the lab either, which is kind of strange
in hind sight.

Anyway, because I didn't know what to expect I ran out and looked for a
very basic book on how networks work. I found something that almost read
like a children's book. It started with AT&T and how they'd wire along
rail lines to build their first telegraph lines.

I had a long history with modems going back to 75 baud speeds on paper
based type terminals which required linefeeds. So some of it filled in
the blanks of missing information for me.

Anyway, based on this post it seems clear to me that you need something
like what I first started with to give you that basic fundamental
concept of the network.

If you run on over to Amazon or your favorite book store you find two
books which are likely called:

How Networks Work
How the Internet works

They should look like picture books almost and be very fundamental. I
think you'd benefit from both.

Thanks Marek for the introduction.

I'm way older than you, and started building germanium amplifier circuits
in high school, learning Fortran well before there was a "77" on punch
cards (the yellow tape was still in the computer room, and the computer
room had a raised floor for the A/C equipment). I still use the reels of
magtape for wrapping things, and it's sort of an inside family joke when
I use magtape for Christmas bows.

In college, I majored in history, although I found time to take PL/1 and
Cobol, and German, none of which I ever used in my life, in addition to
the IBM 370 Assembly language and Astronomy in graduate school.

Then I was a business manager at software startups for decades, until I
retired. Meanwhile, I bought an AT with a $400 100MB hard disk drive as
my first "PC", and then I went up the ranks of Windows crapware until the
XP days when I had my fill. So I switched over to Linux, but I mostly use
it just like I used Windows, which is that there wasn't much I did from
the command line. (Had I wanted to be a programmer, I would have been a
programmer but all those nights spent feeding a deck of cards with JCL
into the hopper soured me, as did the 300-baud modems where you put the
phone into the cradle and the slowness of the terminals, etc.).

Anyway, even though I'm just a business guy, I still delve into technical
matters, and do my own landscaping, automotive work (just changed my
tires for example - yes - that means I changed them - not some guy at the
shop), and I love hiking outdoors and saving rattlesnakes from the
neighbors (who always want to shoot their heads off).

You are much smarter than I am. You are far more knowledgeably in Linux
than I am. You are helpful, and I appreciate that you supply many
scripts, some of which I personally use.

The only thing I fault you for is assuming I'm a troll because I am
responsive. You're just not used to responsive people who respond to
everyone's issues, and who doesn't respond to trolls himself.

My first 40 MB hard drive I bought used for $500 was a Seagate ST506
RLL-MFM drive. Put that inside my Amiga 2000. I built a 286 10 MHz clone
but used it as a terminal with Telix software and a USRobotics modem. No
hard drive need. And I just used MGA at the time.

Later I bought a 256k Genoa VGA card and I attached that to a Sony 1304
HG which cost me about as much as the PC did. Nice screen though. By the
time Windows 3 hit I bought an Orchid Pro Designer II with 1 MB ram and
build a 386/33 MHz PC with 4 MBs of RAM and a brand spanking new 3.5" 40
MB hard drive. The ST506 was the larger 5" hard drive.

Well, if I am wrong it is because we are getting a string of similar
posts. We ask, nicely at first, that you new guys stop your cross
posting. It is not appreciated here. We're here for Linux. The
information being cross posted coming from the consumer group tends to
be wrong or misguided. And I certainly don't want to post in some
Android group the correction. Trolls love to discuss consumer desktop
issues which we don't care about.

I posted a script to help me manage my music on my Android device. But
that discussion was more about the script itself and how to convert an
M3U playlist file into an automated list of items to copy for upload
into my phone, which I do via SSH. So I already do what you're asking
but for music and have already automated much of it. I can even do it
over the internet.

But I don't need to check out your specific FTP application. I only need
to suggest one that is known to work, which I did. If you choose to
disregard that advice and go your own way then that's on you for trouble
that causes you. It's not up to me to test some random app you want to
use. This is not an Android group.

I'm plenty used to responsive people. What I don't want are Android
users giving misguided advice here. SFTP, and the app I suggested right
off the bat work. I have used them both extensively.

To use the phone as the server with ES click the menu lines, then click
Remote Manager,
then click Turn on and follow the instructions given. As this was the
original instructions given
that Will won't follow.

Yes. Thanks to you guys, Will has succeeded.
Here is the step-by-step tutorial if anyone wishes to follow suit.

20150713 SFTP to the Linux SSH server pictures & files.

Install Turbo FTP client & SFTP client - Vlad Mihalachi - June 19, 2015
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=turbo.client&hl=en
0. WARNING: The GUI is *extremely* unintuitive and unpolished! Experts only!
1. Start Turbo FTP client & SFTP client - Vlad Mihalachi - June 19, 2015
2. Press "Create a new account", and choose SFTP (out of FTP or SFTP)
NOTE: Be very careful as this is decidedly NOT a mature implementation.
There are absolutely no warnings when you forget to fill out necessary fields.
It just wipes out everything you did, without any warning whatsoever.
3. In the "General" section, (very carefully) fill out the form:
WARNING: Accidentally hit the "back" arrow one extra time and it *wipes* out
every single thing you've entered, without fail, and without warning!
   Connection Name = foobar
   Username = foo
   Password = bar
Host = 192.168.1.6 (or the linux hostname)
   Port = 22
   Default Remote Folder = /tmp
NOTE: Do not press ANYTHING other than what you type above.
Then either press the "Floppy" icon at top, or go to the next step.
4. In the "Advanced" section, change only what's necessary:
   Encoding = blank
   Default Local Folder = /storage/sdcard0/
NOTE: There are multiple very confusing locations, all of which look the
same, some of which *are* the same, others of which are not, and, to make
matters worse, the GUI flips case constantly so you can *never* be
certain of case (the exact same locations are shown at top in all
uppercase and in the bottom with mixed case!).
WARNING: Once you get past 3 levels, the GUI disappears at top showing you
your current working directory so you instantly LOSE sight of where you are
at the 4th level and further (so you may need to write it down).
Worse, yet, if you hit the back arrow, you start at the beginning!
Hit the back arrow one too many times, and you lose everything!
   /STORAGE/EMULATED/0/DCIM/Camera
   /STORAGE/EMULATED/legacy/DCIM/Camera
   /STORAGE/sdcard0/DCIM/Camera
/STORAGE/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera <== I think this is the right one
/MNT/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera <==I think this is the right one also
   /MNT_1/extSdCard/ (and so on)
   /MNT/sdcard/DCIM/Camera
   /MNT_1.sdcard_1/ (and so on)
   /MNT_1.sdcard_2/ (and so on)
   /MNT_1.sdcard_3/ (and so on)

   Private Key = blank
Use a passphrashe = (slider to the left)
NOTE: The slider has absolutely no markings; but apparently left is off.
   Passphrase = blank
5. There is no way you're going to set this up without wiping it out a few
times due to the many gotchas in the extremely unpolished GUI, but once
you have it set up, the key is to navigate to this set of desktop panes:
   Remote = /tmp
Local = /STORAGE/EXTSDCARD/DCIM/CAMERA (hit the "select all" button)
Hit the "upload" (up arrow) button.

This will copy all your selected photos from the Android device to the
remote Linux device in the specified directory, over WiFi.
6. There is no "quit" button, nor a confirmation message when done (although
individual files do show a status bar), so, just hit the problematic
back arrow to quit out of the program.

This is an expert-only program, with a streamlined GUI that adds absolutely
no bells nor whistles. It just does the job, and, after you get the sequence
of steps down perfectly, it will be fast and efficient.

True.

I asked a question of how to get Bluetooth to select all files.

I solved that one also, just now, without the help of this group since
*nobody* suggested a single bluetooth solution.

I also solved the GUI problem with the suggested extremely unforgiving
"Turbo Client", and, it turns out to be much faster (buttmeter
measurement) than the bluetooth was.

However, in the interests of helping others and giving back to the ng,
here's the bluetooth tutorial for selecting hundreds of files in one fell
swoop.

0. On Linux, KDE: System Settings > Network and Connectivity > Bluetooth
Devices: Devices = enable KDE bluetooth integration
File Transfers: enable receive files,
File Transfers: save files in /tmp/bluetooth,
File Transfers: accept automatically trusted device
Adapters: name = ubuntu-0, powered = checked, always visible

1. On Android, press "Gallery" and locate the photo directory you wish to
transfer en masse to Linux.

2. Now comes the tricky part! So pay attention and don't touch *anything
that I don't tell you to touch! Make sure you are in "Albums" view!
(any other view will fail!)

3. In Albums view, long press on the desired album (e.g., vacation_pics),
and notice that a green checkmark shows up on the "album".

4. Also notice the bluetooth icon that shows at top, so hit that bluetooth
icon, and it will scan for nearby devices.

One of those nearby devices will be "ubuntu-0", so select that.

That's it!
This will send *all* the pictures in that directory to the Linux laptop /
tmp directory over your bluetooth connection between the two devices!

NOTE: On Linux you will see individual "receiving file over bluetooth"
dialog boxes, one for each photo.

That's a nice feature - I didn't realize ES File Explorer had an FTP
server. Unfortunately, it's not working for me. I can't make a
connection from the PC to the phone.

I'll tinker with it some more later. This could be a handy thing
someday.

I tried ES File Explorer's "Remote Manager" FTP server again tonight
and it works! In hindsight, I realize that yesterday it, for some
unknown reason, it chose to suggest a bogus IP address to use for the
FTP client. I don't know where that came from, but tonight it suggested
the correct one. I used it and made the connection and transferred some
files easily.

This is a good tool to have in the kit. In the OP's case, I think this
would have been the easiest solution.

It likely went into /tmp... You seriously wrote this whole thing but
you're too incompetent to use ftp?? Sounds like you're trolling to me.

Use AndFTPPro like I suggested.

You'd have to traverse the directory, which you can do outside of this
app to become familiar with where you will ultimately need to place your
images. But I'm not counting on you to figure that out by the sound of
this.

I could do this in my sleep. Are you seriously this stupid? Long troll
post, but get a life, and get lost.

Marek, nothing happened. Period. I then went back in, as I noted, and hit
the floppy disk icon at top, and that SAVED the newly created profile.

So, it did *not* do anything, and certainly put nothing in /tmp on the
Linux machine. It just quit, and didn't give any warning.

Now, I know you to write good scripts, and you even take advice, e.g.,
from Cybe and others who put checks-and-balances in their programs.

The program *should* have had a check for whether or not the newly
created "account" was "saved", and it should have asked 'do you really
want to exit as the profile was not saved" (or something like that).

It just didn't have it, so I had no feedback of what was happening.
If you doubt that, then you have never used the program, since that's
what it does. Period.

Once I *saved* the newly created account, it showed up though. I was able
to select a bunch of files in the Local pane and hit the 'upload' button,
but I haven't seen those files on Linux (and, yes, of course, /tmp would
be the *first* place I'd look); but I ran a find, and it didn't find
them, so, I'm not yet sure *where* (or if) the files uploaded to.

>> 5. So I killed & restarted the Turbo Client app.

Marek, I didn't want to disagree with you when you had suggested that
app, but, it's not appropriate to suggest a PAYWARE app to a noob who is
*experimenting* with methods, of which only one or two are going to work,
while a half dozen need to be tried.

It's fine to suggest a TRIALWARE app or a CRIPPLEWARE app, because the
noob can get a taste for what the app does. But you are the *only* person
(to date) who suggested a payware app, which is clearly inappropriate
under the circumstances of a noob who needs to test out a bunch of
methods in order to find the one or two methods that work.

Having said that, their is nothing wrong, per se, with payware; it's just
not appropriate when someone is shooting around trying to find a solution
that works - and - when the task is as simple as transferring a file.

In fact, I seriously doubt that the app you suggested is *any* different
(in concept and design) than any of the freeware apps, since all we're
looking for is to transfer a file.

Hence, I didn't want to say this (not wanting to hurt your feelings, and
being appreciative of your help), but, for you to suggest it *twice* and
to suggest that I ignored your first suggestion (which I did so as not to
hurt your feelings), you must note that I ignored it for the reason that
I feel it's not appropriate *under the circumstances* (as described
above).

I hope you take this well, as I do *not* wish to hurt your feelings, and
I find your scripts wonderful and use them all the time.

>> 6. It asked me to "select an account" but the only viable option was to
>> "create a new account". Huh? Didn't I just do that?
>
> And then blew it away. You're either an idiot or a troll.

Actually, I'm just trying to get the job done, but, as you know, when you
are testing out suggestions, you simply try to make them work. In this
specific case, I tried to make it work, and, in that attempt, I realized
only belatedly that there is no warning whatsoever if you don't SAVE the
newly created profile.

So, the problem was simply that I didn't know (and it didn't warn me) to
hit the floppy disk icon at the top after having entered all the data
into the "new account" form.

If that makes me a troll, then, well, your bar for trolls is set far too
low; and if that makes me an idiot, well, I think there is some merit to
that assessment (although, in my defense, the app should have warned me
that I was quitting a GUI without actually saving anything).

Marek, that suggestion made no sense to me, but maybe I'm misinterpreting
what you said (since text is a horrid medium of communication on such
issues).

Let's state the obvious:
1. I know where I want to PUT the uploaded files (i.e., /tmp on Linux).
2. I know what files I want to PUT (i.e., the SDCARD DCIM Camera folder).
3. I have *mounted* the phone many times in the past when the USB was
working, so, I *know* where the files are.

They just happened to show up *differently* in this app. You berate me
for not initially realizing this, but, it's just part of a simple
learning curve. I belatedly found the files, and they weren't in the same
hierarchy that I saw when I had mounted the file system. Why is that? I
don't know, but, perhaps the mount point was different. I don't know,
but, I'm past that hurdle anyway, so it's a moot point, because the files
I want to push to Linux are in /storage/extsdcard/dcim/camera.

Marek, having seen many of your scripts, I'm *sure* you can do this in
your sleep. Maybe not though, as you haven't seen this GUI yet,
apparently, so, it might also take you a bit of trial and error.

Bear in mind that you probably already *know* more about SSH than I do,
so, for example, you might know that it puts files in a certain place on
Linux (it certainly didn't put them in /tmp), perhaps based on a
configuration file, or some other default location on Linux.

There are probably a dozen things you specifically know about SSH file
transfer that I need to learn, in order to even begin to *guess* where
the files went. However, the fact that a find didn't find them is a bit
disconcerting, unless they're in some hidden folder somewhere by default.
