Which is the best package management is debatable; with dpkg being one of the answers. #6 choice of risk, ie stable, testing, unstable comes at a pretty high price in terms of maintenance support. How that variety is accomplished by the other alternate major family of RedHat and its derivatives or the Slackwares or Arches doesn't require as many developers as Debian uses. #5 degree of freedom ie Main, Contrib, & non-free hasn't actually been handled all that 'transparently' by the Debian trunk. It doesn't seem fair to give 'Debian' credit for its rather strict philosophy about requiring free while also giving credit to its offspring which are so open to non-free. Some people who want non-free avoid Debian the parent because they aren't familiar with the routes and repos to using Debian and non-free apps and codecs. #4 diverse documentation isn't a win by Debian. IMO, the best docs are those by Arch and its derivatives. And RedHat is no slouch either. I'll give Deb a win on quick bug fixes #3; I would have to give one of Deb's offspring the win for the #2 installer and I would also give Deb a win on #1 the community, but again, the trophy may belong to one of the offspring such as Ub. -- Mike Easter
