DistroWatch had what I think is a pretty good q&a here this week.
Kinda hits home with recent events in Windows 10 EOL.
Short read.

Advice for new Linux users

The MSEdge people seem to be rather adamant about their zoom. 25% .. 500% or hit-the-road-Jack. I tried as many settings as I could, but absolutely none of them allowed the digits to be selected, or set to "Other". It's good to know my bicycle has the training wheels. I might fall off and see what I wanted to see. I'm used to a lot of tools, the zoom digits can be edited for a good time. Paul

If you're just being sniffy about my use of the browser that came with the OS: In the past, I've generally used: a long time in the past, Netsape, then Firefox; on my W7 machine, mostly Chrome (though with Firefox [and even IE!] as fallback). On this W10 machine, I had the installers for Chrome and Firefox ready (still do, though they'd probably immediately update themselves if I loaded them), but have never got round to installing them, as Edge does all I have wanted - OK, it has minor irritants (not AFAIK being able to override its scrollbar design, no title bar [though that's the underlying Chrome]), but I just haven't really found it necessary to switch. OK, I'm probably being tracked up the wazoo, but don't do anything I'm that worried about (I don't do online banking for example - telephone banking serves me). Similarly, I've not "fought" Windows as much as I have in the past: OK, I've got Classic Shell, and ShutUp10, and have partitioned into C: (OS and software) and D: (data), but e. g. haven't changed the default appearance of windows this time. (Mainly because the old thing - left over from Windows 95 I think! - that brings together all the controls for screen furniture, has finally been banished from 10.) One does get tired of the constant fighting - and I've actually been able to use the computer for the things I want to _do_ (mainly genealogy and downloading [mostly short, mostly music] video and audio [mainly from YouTube]) on it. I'm unlikely to ever go to Linux. (A Linux enthusiast friend gave me a DVD of something I could try out [could run entirely from the DVD if I wanted], a few years ago; I never have.) I'll probably stick with W10 indefinitely. (I have signed up for ESU, but AFAICS from "Relia", nothing has happened yet - last updates were 2010-10-25.) -- J. P. Gilliver. No, we all use Lynx here for web work. <snicker>
Once you've used Lynx, any browser with a window and
graphics, is a step up. I don't think people appreciate
browsers that work (render close to 100% of pages and
not 50% of them). "Decorations" are pretty far down the list.
If I got upset about every little thing... why, I'd be using Fedora.
If I wanted to drive people away from Linux, I'd show them Fedora first.
Much of Linux is unfinished, like the dilapidated buildings in any
downtown. Whereas Fedora is buttery smooth -- and when something
isn't buttery smooth there (a project still in development),
the effect of that is really jarring. Fedora teaches you what happens
when you get carried away with your fine self. There is too much butter
and not enough common sense.
A better butter balance is Zorin.

What are we, cave men ? This stanza has everything you need to know about lame distros (Debian ecosystem). Some distros have "religion", the participants put a bag over their head and they remove "universe" and "multiverse". You, put it back. You update the package listing of the distro with an update command. Some distros remove "synaptic", in an effort to trick you. You put "synaptic" package manager back -- which is just fine, thanks. No need for pillow stuffing via the ponderously slow Software Centre. Jebus. sudo add-apt-repository universe sudo add-apt-repository multiverse sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install synaptic sudo synaptic Packages are also available from places like github, if you want to "offroad". But the repository has somewhere between 25000 and 50000 pieces of software, reasonably secure and ready to go. If you go outside the distro, you are responsible for the security posture that brings with it. Next, someone will be telling us that SNAPs are wonderful, when all they do is waste disk space. Imagine Ubuntu shipping a 6GB DVD, and when the install is finished, important utilities are missing because "there wasn't room". And the SNAPs on the DVD that took up all the room ? The OS re-downloads those, as a punishment for you. The SNAPs are monolithic, not modular. That's what your friends are for in a distro -- they tell you where not to step into pooh. The Linux Mint DVDs are around 3GB. If the DVD is getting a bit old, then you can expect around 1GB of updates to install soon afterwards. But these are small packages being repaired one at a time. Packages are for making the update system more economical. A Firefox or a LibreOffice, those are bound to be a bit bigger than some support library. Paul

(I don't _want_ to > "skip all that".) You can still build from source ;) Half of the discussion there reads a bit like regurgitated thoughts from previous EOL events from whichever Windows version. Not that it's necessarily "bad" advice or anything, but may miss some advances MS has made to their product. -- |_|O|_| |_|_|O| Github: https://github.com/dpurgert |O|O|O| PGP: DDAB 23FB 19FA 7D85 1CC1 E067 6D65 70E5 4CE7 2860

Neither Apple nor Microsoft can offer such a high degree of integrated package management. Apple has an app store for its mobile platforms, not so much for actual Macintosh PCs. Microsoft tried to create an app store for Windows, but so far, from what I hear, it’s a barren desert.

Cumulatives can contain more content than is really needed. But because the software is split into packages, smaller objects are getting patched. Even the download method is selective. I was doing a Windows Update on this machine, and the download was going along slowly 1% 2% 3%, and I was looking elsewhere and when I looked back it was a 90%, and it obviously didn't get there by linearly download all the items from 3% to 90% in 30 second. That is likely some amount of scanning and selection, deciding that most of what it proposed to install, was already installed. The tree keeps multiple versions. If one program needs version1 of a library, and another program needs version2, they're both in the tree. As an example of a package in the Windows tree, there is a version of libarchive. That was integrated the same way as .zip and .cab support was done in WinXP. Now, you can open a .7z and copy files out of the inside of a .7z, as if it was a folder. And libarchive needs more frequent patches, because archives are the targets of exploits. When it comes to third party software from the Store, the equivalent of that on Linux is Google Earth, which is third party, and on at least one distro, is include via a ppa linkage. Paul
