A journey of a thousand miles, starts with a single step.

From my MINGW home folder.

$ cat bobble.c

#include <stdio.h>

/* gcc -o bobble.exe bobble.c         # default optimization */

int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
  printf("ARGC is %d\n", argc);

  for(int i = 0; i < argc; i++) {
     printf("ARGV[%d] is %s\n", i, argv[i]);
  }

  char line[BUFSIZ];

  fputs("\nTo quit the program, press the return key now", stdout);
  fflush(stdout);
  fgets(line, sizeof line, stdin);

  return 0;
}

$  gcc -o bobble.exe bobble.c

There, I've compiled a Windows program. The program
happens to be pointless, but it's a program. I've achieved
something. Now, I just have to learn to program :-)

If you're in Visual Studio instead, you can ask for the
Window template, and that gives you a program that opens
a rectangular window frame. And they give you the code
to do that. Then, you pop in your printf statements
or whatever :-) See, easy peasy.

In MINGW, a package that has a Makefile, I can run
"make" and it does all the compiler calls for you, and
you don't have to be all that clever to do one of those.

And if you need little code snippets to experiment with,
there is rosettacode for examples. There might be some C code
here, to print the digits of Pi .

https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Pi

You can also have the AI write you some code. With
no guarantees the code works, and then your
skills as a debugging person are more important
than your skills as a programmer. One program I asked
the AI to write, it was pretty well entirely rewritten
by the time I was finished with it. Nothing wrong with that,
as the AI version is the "salt" to get you started. It has
enough programming constructs in it, to teach you a little bit.

  Perhaps your 'hearing' isn't all that good?

  I'm not particularly fond of the Microsoft Store and use only a few
apps from it (my software mostly predates 'UWP' (outdated term) apps),
but the Microsoft Store is in no way "a barren desert".

Most Windows users are not interested in switching to Linux. No matter
how hard the Linux community tries to attract new users, Windows users
will stick with what they know. They might experiment with a version of
Linux for a couple of days, but then abandon it in favour of buying a
new laptop with the latest version of Windows pre-installed. Better the
devil you know.

Tomshardware claims the ex-Win10 users are buying Macs. Which is... too funny.

Good. Let them stay away from Linux as long as possible. I much prefer
to have a small niche operating system than a widespread and popular one
that may attract more interest of hackers and other nogoodnix.

Europeans are adopting Linux and Open Source, as part of the “Digital
Sovereignty” movement which is gathering steam there. This is to get away
from the clutches of the USA and its erratic and dictatorial policies.

  FSVSVO 'steam'! It's more that somebody put the kettle on the stove,
but forgot to turn on the gas.

  Yes, there is some effort switching to Open Source, but at the same
time, very big contracts are still being signed for proprietary software
and solutions, because there are no alternative, practical, compatible
solutions.

Some gamers may disagree. Guess which is the best product for running
Windows games in the handheld form factor? It doesn’t even run Windows:
it’s the Linux-based Steam Deck! And now Lenovo is officially offering the
Linux option on its handheld gaming PC, and other vendors of competing
products are also looking to follow suit.

I would suspect that MOST people buy a device (Laptop/Desktop/Phone) AND
IT JUST WORKS. They have bugger all idea what is behind the facade.

And many are not interested if the other Brand devices do things better,
just if their device does what they want!!

Yes, that applies at various levels. My brother - intelligent enough
guy, just not _interested_ in such matters - knows his computer is
Windows, but might not be sure which version; some users may not even
know that. (Probably _will_ be Windows, as virtually all mainstream
suppliers in UK only sell those. Or Apple stores of course.)

I follow much the same: when I want something to do something that the
basic OS or the software I already have don't do, I will look at a
couple - but not every such offering on the "market"; as soon as I find
one that does what I want _reasonably_ well, I stop looking, _even if
there might be one out there that does it better_. Examples include
partition manager (I have the EaseUS one) and clipboard extension (I so
rarely use it I'll have to go look - It's Clipdiary).

That has certainly (mostly) been the case in the past, but over the
decades the Win issues have gotten worse and the linux conditions have
improved.

Personally I began my conversion to linux in the W9x days when linux
usage was more 'demanding', and Win was graphically easier. There was a
time in the past *before* that, in the 80s, when the Atari ST graphical
UI was *better* than MS's offering, so THAT was my choice.

I think that it is somewhat more 'telling' to examine the 'corporate' or
institutional or organizational experiences which would tend to 'force'
a given user into an OS for purposes of the 'duties' of the
organization; in which historically that has been Win and when the
.eu-type countries or jurisdictions want to break that mold, the ones
which are most successful find that the best way to do it is to convert
those users to open-source applications and THEN to the open-source OS
to run those. In doing so, I think it is wiser for the chosen linux OS
to be something more 'generic' and popular w/in the linux community
than, say, LiMux* was.

Munich started that adventure way back in '04; things have changed a LOT
since then.

In my experience, the Linux community doesn't always welcome new users
that are switching from Linux. Some users are right out arrogant; happy
in their ivory tower. That's not the way to persuade other people to
make the switch.

I've been playing with various Linux distributions for years now. Mostly
live USB and on a rare occasion an old computer. Now I have a laptop
with Linux Mint to experiment.

The main thing that hold me back is the loss of the freeware that I use
on W11. The only paid software I have is W11, Dashcam Viewer and Forté
Agent and I definitely don't want to loose that. I know it runs under
Wine (sort of), but it doesn't support SSL, so I would have to work with
something like stunnel.

I could try and see which ones run under Wine or I could search for
alternatives that run under Linux.

Why not use VLC for viewing video footage?

As for Usenet, remember that was born on Unix/*nix systems anyway. That’s
where you’ll find the widest range of software for all parts of the NNTP
stack.

I consider Seamonkey to be the best app for usenet

  His concern is about his newsreader, not NetNews software in general,
and there are probably more GUI newsreaders on Windows than on Windows.

  Anyway, the point is moot, because it's not about *a* (GUI)
newsreader, but about one which is compatible in its GUI, configuration,
scoring, etc., etc..

  As you can see from my User-Agent: header, I don't have that problem,
but I would hate to have to switch to a different newsreader, just
because someone thinks hir OS is 'better'.

  Exactly! "It's the apps, stupid!" No point changing to a 'better' OS
if it can't run your software.

  That's why I, a Unix/UNIX veteran, still use Windows. For historical
(hysterical?) reasons, I'm using Windows. Way, way too much effort to
switch to a 'better' OS. And *why*? To *lose* functionality/
compatibility? Yeah right!

Can I ask how you run Windows? Is that some sort of VM or perhaps on
other hardware?

Some people here, run anything-on-anything.

Others are content to run their OS as a native-only thing.

Every install I've got, there is a good probability it has
a VirtualBox. My daily driver has VirtualBox, VMWare, WSL2/WSLg.
And, I can run *all* of those at the same time, as I have
the RAM for it. They're all Hypervisor-clients and run under
the Hypervisor in Windows (since Win8 or so).

The only thing that doesn't work here, is I've never
been able to get nested VMs to run. We used to do that
in the year 2000, but we can't do it today (unless born
lucky perhaps). It's easier to do that in heterogeneous
circumstances (at some cost to speed of execution). We
could put a copy of Windows hosting a copy of Windows
hosting a copy of Windows, on a Sparc (different instruction set).
Yes, that's slow.

To virtualize things, you need rooted or rootless operation,
and rootless virtualization takes less space. WinXP Mode
on Win7 was rootless. WSL2/WSLg is rootless. Virtualbox
is rooted (draws a rectangle with the entire desktop inside
plus the windows within that OS, all rendered). With rootless,
just the foreign window from the virtual machine, pops up
on the screen. When I run Linux Firefox, just the Linux Firefox
window pops up, and the Linux desktop is "not visible".

You've probably seen my Apple OS running in a window
on my daily driver. That's a rooted presentation, showing
an entire desktop and not just program windows.

   [Picture]

    https://i.postimg.cc/jdKTvJDs/Big-Sur-4930-K-VM.gif

I have an ARM folding-computer rooted desktop I could
show you, and that's a demo by Microsoft which I haven't
taken out of storage recently, as there's really
nothing to do in there. Even an ARM executable can
run on my AMD processor. It's a heterogeneous VM inside.

But you don't have to do any of that as a Windows user,
it's just fluff for entertainment.

  I just run Windows (now 11) on a (HP) laptop in normal native mode. So
no VM or anything like that.

  Perhaps the fact that I'm using Cygwin - a Unix/GNU-like environment
on/for Windows - is what made you ask the question?

  So for *me* I have the best of both worlds, a Unix-like environment
with all the commands and tools which come with that *and* a normal
Windows environment for my other programs.

  N.B. This posting is brought to you, courtesy editor vim (Unix),
newsreader tin (Unix) and personal news-server Hamster (Windows
(32-bit))! :-)
