#39400 — Linux Mint 21 and xrdp

SubjectLinux Mint 21 and xrdp

With LM 20.3 and xrdp, I used to be able to log in remotely using the
same credentials that I used locally, even if I was already logged in
locally.

Now with LM21, it appears I've lost that capability. To use my "local"
credentials. I must be logged out locally. Is this a setting somewhere
that can be modified or is the a change?

Thanks

Hi,
sorry, no answer, but I'm interested in this two.
I switch often from RDP to the "real" one and back, so if I miss logging
out, I use a second account, just to kick me out and then login again.

With Windows, it just switches vom RDP to local and back again.

Tips are welcome :-)

I have absolutely no tips for either of you. I don't use xrdp nor would I.
Do other remote sharing/viewing applications not work for either of you?
There are many options. Some of them more Linux-friendly or
linux-native. What are your requirements, what are you trying to
achieve? Do you require connecting to a main/existing display session?
Why not use VNC (tunnel through ssh for extra security)? X11-vnc
connects to active/main display sessions. Or use NX/FreeNX or my
favourite X2go.

Not sure why the need for xrdp.

+1 I've been using Teamviewer for for over 6 years. Both to remote into
my work desktop (before I retired) and to administer client desktops I
support. Running LMDE 5

I, personally would never use Teamviewer. It's proprietary code, I don't
like the License.
Besides, it was compromised (cracked/hacked/abused/whatever) years ago
and they blamed it on dumb users not inherent vulnerabilities. I don't
trust it, never will.

Yes it was aimed at you.
I used to use it once a month but I don't think I've used it in a year. Mint 21 had an issue with it putting it's
apt-key in the wrong place and causing update-manager issues. It's been fixed but hear again, I don't use it enough.

Teamviewer is a great software, the company is right in my neighbourhod,
but it costs money. Even for schools as mine.

So, no money, no teamviewer :-(

My students are running Windows and MacOs. Both support easyily RDP.
And on the Windows-PCs, I'm not allowed to install software, it's a
classroom and I am only a teacher :-))
And I think, RDP is faster and more stable than VNC (jus my experience).

So, to get my students on a linux desktop, I use rdp.

Macs come with VNC enabled in the 'Finder' these days. And they for
sure have ssh client. As for windows, I'm sure Windows 10 at least comes
with openSSH client installed now. Turn on sshd on the linux server and
have students on Macs and Windows use ssh to log on to the Linux box and
have the learn how to use and admin a proper server the right way, not
via GUI. :-)

don't worry, I do, I do.

But they also have to learn Remote Access including GUI, and the most
used system on the market is Lin^h^h^h, ups, Windows, so rdp it is.

Since you're replying to me and not the OP, I'll answer.
Remmina is client-side remote desktop client. It supports multiple
protocols to connect to. It is not a server-side daemon running that
other clients can connect to.

IOW, it's a client not a server-side service.

One thing that comes to mind, is the change from X11 to Wayland/Weston.

Maybe the graphics on the local session, are now different than
the graphics path running remotely. And one of the pieces of
software "doesn't want the other thing running". Or, the other
thing running needs to connect through a different interface,
which isn't there, or isn't suitable.

I see a weston-rdp package. But, I don't know what that means.

https://linux.die.net/man/8/xrdp

https://man.archlinux.org/man/community/weston/weston-rdp.7.en

    weston --backend=rdp-backend.so

The year 2022, is the year of "target-rich graphics"
where you just can't have a complicated enough graphics stack.

X11 to Remote Desktop Protocol.

The host would be LM21.

The client could be Windows (as it's RDP after all).

                 RDP
   xrdp +--------------------+
        | |
       LM21 Windows (client)

More normally, RDP would be run between two Windows boxes, like this.

                 RDP
        +--------------------+
        | |
       Windows (host) Windows (client)

There are obviously more solutions than this, for remoting into a PC.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Protocol

On a LAN, you might well have the network bandwidth to
not care about the protocol details. If you're remoting
into PCs on the Internet, the protocol used is a lot
more important (as you might not have enough upload
bandwidth to make for comfortable sessions).

So I gave this a try and noticed the same thing.
That I had to be logged out at the console of the
remote LM21 desktop, before the RDC could connect.

Once connected though, something else weird happened.
I could open a file management window, but an attempt
to open Terminal using the icon on the bar, did not work.
And typing "xterm" into the Cinnamon interface, did not
work either.

Since terminals do not like to run as root (and if you
could see what was going on, there would be a warning
message as well), I would say the RDP session is not
running as the user. It could be that some part of
RDP is running as root.

So rather than some clever design change, it might be
an elevation issue.

I don't use stuff like this normally, and it could
easily be user error on my part.
