After I open and close a few messages sylpheed slows considerably.
Is this common?

Please check disk IO when it slows down.

BTW, how good is Sylpheed? I am currently using the Seamonkey suite for
my email needs. Used to use Mailspring which was good but a lot of RAM.
Regards.

Personally, I lean toward the Claws fork (of those two),

https://www.claws-mail.org/features.php

Claws devs say:

I dunno' 'bout that; never tried such a thing.; nor do I know where I
might read something.

I've used Claws for usenet, not mail. I see Claws uses a significantly
newer gtk (+3.20.x) than sylpheed (+2.xx) so, I would think their fork
is pretty far apart now.

I just tried it.

It found my Sylpheed settings and invited me to accept them for Claws.
I agreed and it did it.

I am replying using it now.

I am not impressed by its appearance. The onscreen type is too small.

I cannot see anything on its menus that might permit changes.
