#39401 — Claws mail bacground

Anybody knows how to change Claws mail 4 background? It is too white. I prefer something duller. I don't know why there is no midground between dark and light themes. My old eyes will prefer something like a white coffee color for all backgrounds.

I assume this is controlled by GTK3. Maybe you can change the theme.

I assume, too, but dont know what to change?
In my usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark-Teal/gtk-3.0/gtk.css there are so many (background) lines, and I won't touch that.
Can you be a little more specific? Maybe a link to some page.

I haven't tested that:

gtk-theme-config
This repository has been archived by the owner. It is now read-only.

Oomox is flatpak and is big no,no. 4.1 GB required. It does not change the background, only UI elements.

Also AWF. It's in Mint 20.3 repository. Cinnamon.
It will let you preview gtk3 or gtk2 themes. Without restarting Cinnamon.
You can even pick system themes.

PS If you want to edit one of the system themes, copy it to ~/.themes folder. Make it if you don't have it.
The copy in your home directory overrides the system theme, so make changes there and they will show up.

You can change the background color there.

I would think the message background color would be specified in
.claws-mail/clawsrc but I sure can't find it.

I posted the question to news.software.readers, maybe someone there
will come up with an answer.

To change GTK theme/color for claws-mail alone
this can be done by setting an environment variable in the
command to run the application,

GTK 2 applications
Uses the env variable "GTK2_RC_FILES". Start an application with
GTK2_RC_FILES=/path/to/theme/gtkrc <command>
GTK 3 applications
Uses the env variable "GTK_THEME". Start an application with
GTK_THEME=/path/to/theme/gtk.css <command>

Examples

GTK3:
$ GTK_THEME=/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark-Teal/gtk-3.0/gtk.css claws-mail

GTK2:
$ GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark-Teal/gtk-2.0/gtkrc claws-mail

create a script file in $HOME like so:

touch $HOME/claws-mail.sh

Make it executive:

chmod +x $HOME/claws-mail.sh

Open $HOME/claws-mail.sh in a text editor of your choice (example):

adie $HOME/claws-mail.sh

Enter text as example below:

#!/bin/bash
GTK_THEME=/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark-Teal/gtk-3.0/gtk.css claws-mail

Save edit,
Then find the claws-mail.desktop file on your system and open it
in a text editor then locate this line in the file:

Exec=claws-mail %u

Edit that line to:

Exec=/home/YOURUSER/claws-mail.sh %u

Save edit. Note that YOURUSER above would be your actual username.

Thank you for your elaborated answer, but that does not help me in my problem. I already use
Mint-Y-Dark Teal theme for my system. Only the white color is to bright for me.
Somehow, I managed to change the white color in gtk.css by changing all (255,255,255)(#ffffff)(white)
inputs to (248,245,245)(#f8f5f5).But the change made the result different than expected. It finishes with
(235,235,235) which I can't find in gtk.css. It must be that GTK changed something else in the system.
Will continue with dulling the theme a little bit more :))
