some years ago I was looking for a solution to long term archival of data.

In the end the only thing I felt would actually work, was a very large 
pair of disks, one an exact copy of anything important on the other.

as one disk dies, it is replaced and re-synchronised. Rsync is wonderful 
with cron..

Best of all, I dont have to find te right DVD/tape/floppy. The data is 
online there if I need it

Yep, and multiple 3.5" disks in case I had bad disks since they are 
decades old.

Does it work with the mtools package? Also using VFAT with
diskettes formatted as FAT-16 may fail. Try the MSDOS file
system instead of VFAT, as MSDOS will not attempt to create
long filename entries in the directory.

I am thinking this might be an ownership problem.  However, I am
not sure if the same ownership rules apply to floppies like they
do with hard drives.  I would assume they do but I could be wrong.
Anyway, I would suggest to try this with a floppy you don't mind
ruining.

To take ownership of the floppy, enter these commands in this
order into a terminal window.  Change 'yourname' to your user
name in the chown command...

sudo umount /media/floppy0
sudo mount -a
sudo chown user:yourname /media/floppy0
sudo chmod -R 755 /media/floppy0

The ownership and permissions of the mount point directory are, and
always have been, totally irrelevant to the ownership and
permissions of the mounted filesystem.  For filesystems, like the
FAT variants, that do not support Unix permissions and ownership,
those parameters are set up at mount time for the entire filesystem.
The relevant mount options are "uid", "gid", "umask", "dmask", and
"fmask".  See the manpage for the /mount/ command for details.  You
can put a line in /etc/fstab to specify the mount point and options
for the floppy device (be sure to include the "noauto" option), and
most automounters will see and respect that.

Yes, there can be SELinux context issues about whether a confined
process is allowed to use a particular directory as a mount point,
but once the mount has succeeded you are past that point, and
_nothing_ about the permissions of that mount point directory
apply any more.

the mounting.  If you do the mount manually in a shell session, that
should be your UID.  If you want to be sure it's opened up for
everybody, you can add "umask=0" to those options, or you can add
"uid={your_numeric_UID}" to be sure everything is owned by you
regardless of how the mount gets done.

I just realized, if you use "sudo" or "su" to do the mount as root,
then with the fstab line you have everything will be owned by root.
But, with that "user" option in there, you should be able to run
"mount /dev/fd0" or "mount /media/floppy0" in your own ID and see
everything as owned by you. You have to give just _one_ argument to
the mount command (a possible "-r" for read-only is also allowable)
so that it will consult /etc/fstab for the rest. If you try to give
both the device and the mount point, then fstab is not used at all
and you'll see "Only root can do that."

I use KDE (Dolphin) to mount drives. I am trying to avoid using the 
command line.

To delete implies full permissions. Therefore its not a permissions issue

I am wondering if in fact the diskette is knackered and its only the 
directory track that can be accessed.

If you can delete, it sounds like permissions is set properly.

What kind of drive is it?

I vaguely remember some comments about USB floppy drives in the past, but 
I can't remember the context. If it's a USB floppy drive, there may be 
limitations because of that.

As someone said, being able to read a floppy disk at this time is way more 
important than being able to write to it.  I know I have a couple of USB 
floppy drives, just in case, but I've never tried them.  This computer 
still has a floppy drive.

If there occure problems after mounting isn't it an option to use
the mtools instead ?

FAT since these floppy disks were from the (19)90s.

Does KDE use that? I was using KDE to access the disks. I don't use 
command lines for disk stuff.

	Well maybe it is time to learn.
	mtools is on my Mageia 5 KDE and the way to start is "man mtools" at 
the command line.	

	Oh and be glad your disks from the 1990s are not AmigaDOS
disks.  That is a very difficult problem.  And there is no CLI
suite of tools to deal with them.  All my archives from that
period as well were made on ZIP disks and I would have to
figure out how to deal with that.  Maybe I can get the
Amiga 2000b/68060/64 Megabytes of ram, running again and switch them 
back to a more readable format. Maybe not...

It's up to you to solve this problem. The mtools are used at the command 
line and worked fine for me for all purposes.
