It is only a problem because Republicans unleashed bigotry as a campaign device. Seeing what Democrats faced after Truman desegregated the Army should have taught them not to juggle grenades. But winning races was more important. When I was young California was a swing state and bigotry against Mexicans and chicanos was de rigeur.
