It's only nonsense if you don't believe in freedom and my 'crusade'
isn't about any one thing.  There have been more than plenty 'things'.

That said, I don't actually dissuade anyone from using Ubuntu if they
can stomach it (knowing what its developers have been up to), but only
attempt to both instruct and provide an easy to use alternative
(Debian) without the personal Shuttleworth ego baggage which Ubuntu
carries.

I see that ATT have embraced Ubuntu and think that's a good thing when
seen as opposed to embracing Microsoft.  

I can't say that embracing Debian wouldn't have been better, but they
were looking for purchased support.  How could I fault them (or Ubuntu)
for that?

Had it not been for the controversy the Great Unwashed would have been
none the wiser about just how their searches were being used.
Something such as that should be opt in, not opt out.  Otherwise,
spyware.

switch off the 'Transmissions' in Win10 but it was the wrong way around.

At the same time it was another reason to use an alternative DE like 
Kubuntu.

exactly, "not unity" was the workaround, pretty simple.  I think it's
why people frowned but didn't go bat-shit-nutz over it.

You may be a PR expert in another life, but in this one, you ain't no 
data scientist. I see no correlation from the numbers you're drawing 
inference from there.

And worse, you drawing any correlation between the numbers from a 
mailing list to those of people actually using Ubuntu desktop (or 
server) over all! Could be trends to forums or other such Ubuntu help 
sites. Shame shame.
