There's a *real* fire ring in the park next door. The fire itself is built on a small mound, but there are three or four rings of concrete benches around it. The local state parks have designated fire rings/pits, on the ground. And one of the park rules is a camper doesn't start their own fire pit. Back when I was in Scouts, 1960s through 1970s, except when I was in the Navy, we just dug a small hole a few inches deep, and replaced the sod when we left. The real problem with fire rings like much else is population density. In places like New England if everybody who camped out built a fire using wood from the surroundings pretty soon there wouldn't be any forest left. At least it was that way once--I have the impression that the popularity of camping out has declined.

A few sites I remember had old "resting" camp sites. You could tell they had once been set up for camping but they were in various states of return to nature. Old campfires left a long lasting stain in the sand in the Pine Barrens. Some of the sand would be black. It didn't appear to inhibit plant growth. I'd still go camping if I had company. -- Dan Espen

Taking wood that has naturally fallen causes less damage. But whether the damage in either case is significant or not depends on how often it takes place. So if a forest is visited by more campers, the rules they will have to observe in order that the forest will remain healthy will have to be more stringent. At one point, it won't matter if branches are cut from trees. At another point, taking naturally dead wood will be enough of an improvement. I remember our Scout troop in the 1960s would change locations for weekend camping trips. Our scoutmaster knew several farmers in the area, who let us camp on their property. So we wound up using the dead fallen wood that they wanted to clear, but didn't have the time to do so. But I doubt we made much of a dent in the amount. For places like summer camps, the camp ranger would typically bring a load of down wood to our campsite before we got there on Friday evening. He told us it was to reduce wild fires spreading. Well, back then, he more likely said 'forest fire' insterad of wild fire. -- Jim

My point was exactly the opposite -- for some forests, and some definitions of "damage" (ecological, not economical). An example: a wetland area up in the mountains, which I visited with my brother a few years ago. There are pines and spruces growing here and there -- small and ancient, and half-dead. /That/ kind of dead wood is valuable: exposed to the elements, extremely hard, extremely old (wouldn't be surprised if some of it had been dead since the 1800s). We started out cooking right on the fire. (Hardcore.) A couple of trips later, we started packing a wire grill. After a few years, a fire ban forced us to upgrade to a white gas grill. We still made a fire. Keeps the bugs away and provides light, warmth. -- Dan Espen
