Kernighan certainly makes it sound like a great place to work, if you
could get in (PhD pretty much required for any permanent research

The picture quality really didn't bother me, and yeah, I rarely read
e-books. It's hard to replace a proper dead-tree book.

Quite right. There are people who are professional indexers. It is hard to do a good job of identifying the terms to index and using synonyms as needed when a term appears in different forms. Making life more exciting, most books have a page budget for the index so you have to adjust the set of tags to fit. >Maybe it can be helped by employing some A.I. algorithms ? I have a good supply of those small yellow Postits and a yellow map pencil for highlighting the paper copy. And as you say, I can quickly search the text using the PDF version. As far as the index goes, I find that a good index has more information in it than just the page numbers.

I used "A.I." because I imagined something smart enough to do a good job generating the index. Something much better that a simple mechanical "crossreference".

I've generated these for my lecture notes in the past, to make it easier for students to revise. But I take your point about selecting the right words to index. I made a list of 'stop' words and eliminated them, then manually pruned what was left. I generated the KWIC index, and decided to prune a few more words until it looked right. I have a lot of "batch" files (.BAT) that rely on 16-bit utilities. I have the 16-bit utilities, but would have to go to extremes to actually get to use them since I have switched to the 64-bit version of Windows. (Maybe "DOSBOX" or a VM of a 32-bit Windows?). Instead of that I have slowly been rewriting them in PowerShell. I have a few "greenbar" printouts from decades ago of programs and at least they are still readable. I need to be more conscious of archival opportunities going forwards. Maybe the "cloud" is the key. Maybe "Onedrive" ? Of course you have to maintain credentials to access the "cloud". And "free" today may not be "free" tomorrow.
