Skype for Business was just awful. It appears to have been superseded
now by Teams, which is actually a substantial improvement.

Google "LaTeX", which is not a rubber product. This is not new, it's been around since 1984 and has been used pretty much since that time. It's pretty much the standard tool for the purpose among working mathematicians. Various word processors also have some sort of attempt at math formatting with varying degrees of success. If you are willing to pay 177 bucks a year or shell out a hundred bucks or so for a Raspberry Pi (hobby or self-instruction use only in either case) then Mathematica becomes an option.

There's also Brian Kernighan's "eqn". A version of it seems to be
installed by default on this Ubuntu machine I'm posting from. It
produces troff output.
I read about it in Kernighan's Unix history/memoir, having been spurred
by this thread to read it.

A quick look at the submission requirements for mathematical journals indicates that the general procedure is to submit for peer review in PDF and then for publication in TeX.

I'd expect any publisher with one or more mathematics titles to be able to cope with TeX - I know Elsevier could when I was there 15 years ago or so, I'm sure they still can. As you might imagine, typesetting mathematical journals had always been difficult and expensive. TeX made their life a lot easier. As to why TeX rather than eqn, the output of TeX looks better than eqn and in that era I think there still may have been licensing issues with Unix software. For other publishers, it varies a lot. Once I wrote a book in LaTeX mostly to see if I could, about 25 years ago. One professor I knew in passing (from a couple of conferences) tought himself LaTeX in retirement (at the age of over 70) and wrote a book with it. He didn't have a computer background at all, he was a chemical engineer and rheologist. Then again, you need fairly heavy mathematics to write about phenological rheology. I have it at work, so I can't check right now, but I think the book was published in 1994. ( https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-642-57953-0 in case you were wondering).

Rick Umali recommended it in early September, and I would have missed it if you didn't mention it again. I must get that book. People on Amazon complained about the low editing quality (it being self-published) but the sample pages look good. The text and graphs absolutely fine. The pictures are rastered and a bit low-contrast, maybe that's what people are griping about. However, they are quite good enough. As for style... maybe an editor would have changed some things about the style, and I don't think that would have been for the better. As it is, it is authentic.
