If anything, the South would have industrialized to end its reliance on the North, and that would have indirectly ended slavery in another ~50 years and led to reintegration on much better terms than Reconstruction. By the 1890s we'd managed to re-integrate the country without a lot of lingering violence or guerrilla warfare. Now a group of idiots wants to upset the applecart by saying brave southern soldiers should not be honored because they may have owned slaves. If you look at history slavery was common throughout the US until the early 1800s, and should not be a basis for deciding whether or not someone was "worthy". I think the answer to your question is "probably not", at least to the same extent. On the other hand maybe two competing countries would have prospered more because of the competition. -- Pete

Immediately after the civil war, I don't think the North treated the South very well. I would recommend the biography of James Byrnes by Robertson. It describes what went on in the South after the deal of 1872. It was not pretty, and there was a great deal of lingering violence against black people. Sadly, for at least the next 75 years, southern politicians became one issue--who could promote white supremacy the most. The South was so wrapped up that that it disregarded other issues like education and infrastructure. As to history and judging the character of long-ago political figures, we need to look at them in the context of their times. We were taught in school that basically all the 'founding fathers' owned slaves, but they were still heroes for standing up against the British and establishing our country. Likewise, in the 1930s, a lot of companies and they people who ran them did some things that were, by today's standards, rather reprehensible. But the reality of it was in _their_ day, it was standard behavior. At present, there are attacks on Woodrow Wilson because of some racist things he may have done in his day. As I understand it, Wilson really wanted world peace after WW I ended, and really worked extremely hard trying to achieve it. However, he totally failed to understand the mindsight of both America and European countries, and his noble efforts didn't get very far. Anyway, for his racist actions, I can't help but suspect most national leaders would've made the same choices as Wilson did in that era.

AFAIK, Wilson went senile, and his wife, and advisors, did the business for the rest of his term, kinda like Ronald Reagan. Even Lincoln himself was not fond of Blacks, there was a sort of plan to ship them back to Africa, which was implememnted in a small way in Freetown, Liberia, where the returned Afro-Americans oppressed the local Africans. Why? We don't honor those who fought on both sides of World War II. The United States still has a serious problem with viewing the history related to black people and slavery in an accurate manner. Even having Obama as President hasn't helped. The only valid perspective on these matters is from the black people who were the innocent victims. And, yes, of course that means that the North doesn't get off scot-free for its complicity in slavery and its own use of slaves. Every deviation from total equality from 1776 onwards can only be utterly condemned. And black people still aren't equal today. Their wealth, income, and education levels, percentile by percentile, aren't identical to those of white people whose ancestors entered the United States at the same time. Secondly, there is considerable debate on what constitutes the responsibilities of society, and those of the individual. Third, there is debate that some government programs over the decades have been actually counter-productive, they hurt people rather then helped them. There are numerous examples of communities that received massive external aid yet haven't improved or even gotten worse. Fourth, there is debate on self-destructive behavior of poor people that inhibits any improvement. When it gets down to urban issues, city liberals have far higher expectations than of suburban conservatives of what the government should be doing for people, instead of people doing stuff for themselves. When I moved the city to the suburbs, I was quickly struck by the difference in attitudes and expectations. In the 'burbs, we had a park that was full of litter. A neighbor told me to come to town hall to deal with it. I expected a meeting where we'd bitch to the town council and demand that they clean up the park. No. The plan was that a bunch of volunteers--us--would be handled shovels and bags, and we went out and cleaned up the park.

Perhaps back in the 1950s and earlier they initially just sough equality of opportunity because at that time there wasn't. But in the 1970s that changed and outcome became the real issue. What screws up the debate is that various factors go into a societal outcome, not just initial opportunity. Indeed, early efforts at "affirmative action" were intended to improve qualifications of applicants by offering better education and recruiting opportunities. But this proved inadequate and the focus evolved to demands for better outcome, thus reverse discrimination. Unfortunately, some of the efforts to improve education were hopelessly misguided and naive, and a ton of federal money was wasted. Liberals have always looked at statistics that reinforce their position unquestionably, nor tolerate questions about them. They're quick to claim discrimination when in fact there is none, and they're pushing to make the law (if it isn't already) look at 'outcome' as opposed to actions. > I haven't seen much debate about that. Taking benefits away from everyone--as has been done in some states-- causes people to starve and be homeless. Many poor areas--in both urban and rural places--simply don't have jobs for those willing to work. Further, in many poor areas, the workplace skills is lacking, which is a lot tougher to address. In the Depression, society had an 'authoritarian' mindset, that is, the boss or government is always right, and when he says jump, you jump. But in the 1960s, the pendulum swung to the opposite extreme, where _anything_ the boss says is questioned, and accusatons of exploitation or other are quick to be filed. The Depression mindset wasn't good, but the modern mindset isn't good either.

As far as a horrible life, it's been mentioned here that the workers in the New England mills probably had as bad a life, and were valued less than the slaves; life was tough. -- Pete

Second, I'm not sure I'd agree that other workers had it as bad as slaves because: --slaves were often whipped, workers usually not. --slaves had no choice of mate or family. --slavery was involuntarily. a person was born a slave and stayed a slave forever under his owner. in contrast, a mill worker could work at another mill. If he was talented, he could set up his own workshop. If he was ambitious, he could leave town and travel west. Admittedly, it was very hard for mill workers to make changes in their lives, but there were some options to it, more so than were available to slaves. While mill workers had few freedoms, they still had more than a slave who had none and existed in a culture that saw them as sub-human. --farm work was very hard. Many mill workers, especially in the earliest days, were former farmers and while mill work was rough, still found the mill preferable to the farm, which is why they went to the mills. A slave did not have that option. --a slave's children were gonna be slaves. But a millworker's might have a better future, maybe there was more education, maybe they could move west, or do something else. Many industrial workers and immigrants worked hard so that their kids could do better. Slaves didn't have that option.
