It is well known that JP Morgan refused to invest when he
understood that what was proposed precluded any way of charging for the
power delivered and thus any way of paying to generate it.

It is far from clear that what Tesla proposed was possible.

There isn't any question that it can. Quite a lot of energy is
transferred from the Sun to the Earth without a single wire in site.

ITYF the efficiency is fairly low... That doesn't matter for solar as
the energy is free and mostly wasted. It would matter for any other
energy source.

Nope, there's very little loss between the sun and the top of the
atmosphere, after that the losses do start to mount up and of course
conversion to electricity tends to be pretty lossy. Of course the vast
majority of the output of the sun isn't headed our way, which is just as
well.

There's not much loss in a laser which is the principle behind
laser launch systems, the inconvenient part is that there's a lot of loss
between electricity and laser light but the actual wireless free space
energy transfer is pretty efficient even in air.

Define "efficiency" in this context.

With '80s technology 85% was demonstrated in one experiment using
microwaves. Whether that will scale and whether it can be improved
upon are open questions.

Thanks for those links Scott. They briefly lift the standard of what must be
the most hopelessly ignorant and stupid thread in a.f.c's long history.

Thanks, those are a nice supplement to my favourite back-of-the-envelope
calculations, which show that if our population continues to double every
40 years (as it has done until recently), there will be one person for every
square meter of dry land in 600 years - and that the entire mass of the
planet will be converted into a swarming mass of humanity in 1800 years.

I demonstrated that to a physics professor once, who was a fan of
large families. His response "you used the wrong kind of statistics"
however he did not have an explanation of that the "right kind of
statistics" would be.

There's no doubt that growth has to stop.
Fortunately, we have many examples of that happening around the world.

I read the first article above and in the first paragraph I said to
myself, wait this is bull, clearly the solution is stopping growth.
The article took a long time to get around to that.

True, but at least it eventually got there.

Unfortunately, there are many people who belive that growth can and must
continue indefinitely. Some of these people are very powerful and are
benefiting immensely from the status quo - and are arranging things so
that they'll continue to benefit even after everything goes sideways.

The trouble is that nobody has figured out how to maintain stable
employment with static growth. And then there's the problem of the
loans that can only be repaid if the tax base continues to grow.

We may have to take the view that the money numbers don't really
matter at that scale and can be negotiated out of existence in order to get
rid of that last one.

FSVO “recently”. In most developed countries the birthrate is lower than
the replacement rate (last I heard, may be lower now) It appears as
countries get wealthier and better educated the birthrates decline. I
forget the numbers, but I think projections are now that world population
will stabilize in a few decades. Of course, if this d@mn plague gets worse,
who knows?

Population growth generally follows a sigmoid and only looks
exponential until resource limits start to bite, this is seen all over the
place. I don't understand how that translates to "rich folk stop breeding",
but that does work to flatten the apparent exponential into a sigmoid
which is what always happens.

Well, the curve is just a solution to the ODE y' = y * (1 - y).
(and a few constants thrown in to adjust for real world units).
The ODE for the exponential is jyst y' = y. Now, you can see why and
where the solutions are similar.

And then governments have fits because their precious growth slows down.

It's hard-wired into many lifeforms to breed like crazy when threatened, in
the hope that a few will survive the apocalypse. The rich folk know better
so they slow down - but expect the peons to continue breeding in order to
maintain a supply of serfs that the rich can exploit and look down on.

Yeah, only you omitted the assumed condition, "all else being equal".
But at the present level of global population, never mind in 40 years
after another doubling, "all else" isn't stable.  Climate change;
dependency on technology for which resources become depleted;
complexity catastrophe anywhere, from weather to finance; pandemic
amplified by population density; inter alia.

And craziness, folie à plusieurs. We're seeing that in the USA right
now. Collapse of the USA as a world economic power and influencer,
whether because Trump decides to hide in Florida and order a tactical
nuclear strike on Congress or because a million gullible adherents
successfully start a civil war, will interrupt the sigmoid globally.

Okay, wild examples but we're globally in a domain where "all
else" assumptions cannot be relied upon much beyond next week.
It's already remained in its exponential upward path because of
increasingly complex, potentially unstable implementations of
technology. We've already shingled out onto the fog.

IIRC, that covered very nicely in the opening scenes of the Idiocracy
movie.

Methinks a bigger problem is the naysayers pretending it isn't here.
