What is your dislike of linux based on ? I've used different versions
of it. Along with different versions of Unix, Windows, IBM OS400,
Apple ][+ AppleDOS, VAX VMS, MS-DOS, AmigaDOS, Sinclair ZX-81,
Arduino, etc. The only one I consider poorly written is Windows.

I do not dislike Linux. It's just irrelevant to me.

Didn't you just characterize Linux as a virus?

If it's a virus, I guess I'm glad I have it.

If someone calls an operating system a cancer, its not irrelavent to
them. Otherwise, you would just ignore its existance.

Damn site too complicated even then

A real time microkernel for an 8086 is about 2k bytes of machine code.

The device drivers are bigger than that, and support libraries.

Didn't we all, at one time or another?

ISTR that a real time interrupt driven multi tasking task switcher is
just a few hundred bytes...

Actually about 256 bytes. I had one as an exercise for familiarising myself
on each microprocessor as it came out and recoding it in the new
instruction set.

It's hardly worth it.

What you do in principle for a premeptive scheduler is set up a linked
list of structures, containing at a minimum a tasks PC, SP, status
(active sleeping etc).

A timer ISR then looks at the list, and which task is active, and if it
can find another active task, stores the current SP , after pushing
all the registers into the stack) in the tasks structure, and loads the
next actives tasks SP from the structure, pops all the registers off
THAT, ready to IRET back that task.

Suspending and resuming tasks can be done by setting the status in the
linked lists. Typically a task suspends itself and a hardware interrupt
routine resumes it.

You can then add features, like sleep() that sets a time in another
field in that structure, decremented every timer interrupt, and then
sets the task to resume once that reaches zero.

Or you can add priority, such that the task with the highest priority
gets the timeslice, till its finished.

You might add a basic re-enterable library of stuff that can be used by
multiple tasks.

The rest them becomes how you organise device drivers to achieve a
uniform interface to hardware, and system calls.

That is how you design a simple OS for bare metal on a computer you know
the hardware layout of.

Its a far cry from what e.g., linux is, which is so much more.

And that really is the point. A Pi isnt where I would start for bare
metal OS development. I'd use a PIC of some sort, like an arduino board.

PI is a fantastic platform to teach basic application programming, but
its a lousy place to teach OS programming.

Well no, he didn't. Just got the kernel running

The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all
private property.

This is the style of thinking that gives the computer industry such a
bad reputation. It gave rise to the reinterpretation of Newton's quote
"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
In the computer industry we stand on each others toes".

Linus Torvalds had the intelligence _not_ to be a one-man-band. He
stood on the shoulders of Professor Tanenbaum, Richard Stallman and
the rest of the Free Software Foundation and he acknowledges they were
essential to develop Linux.

You can lament the fact that students are no longer taught how to use
wire spring relays and mercury delay lines as computer memory. The
rest of us will rejoice that today's students learn our requirement to
have event driven programs written in, say, Python and they have no
idea that the hardware has rearranged the machine instructions that
were output by the Python interpreter.

You keep saying that as if you knew what one is, but people pointing
out your errors isn't straw, its a house made of bricks.
