I still stick with 24(or 25)x80, mostly out of habit. I used to use the
full 160 on a 3290 - where I had a horizontal rule to help read along the
line. It's hard to read across long lines.

So, sorry I called you a Luddite.

But you are.

:)

Yes, long lines are bad.
I stop at 130 or so, but don't type source code that wide.

Couldn't you make the background stripey like the listings used to be?
That would help with the long lines if you ever have to deal with them.

Some of the displays of Pineapple News is based on that kind of listing.

I tend to obey the 80-column format; at least not violate it by very
much. 90 x 50 is a normal screen format. That gives room for two screens
plus some borders and small indicator screens on each frame of the
virtual screen.

I don't like to push functions much beyond 70-80 lines. Of course, there
are some exceptions, like the "big select" dispatchers etc.

I like to code some stuff as state machines, and that inevitably
generates the big select (sometimes an outer and an inner one too).

I use the colour highlighting in emacs a lot, and load various
modules explicitly. When I first enter code I want a light highlighter,
but when reviewing other's (or my own, for that matter) I want a
lot deeper analysis. Even to the point of making the editing
a little sluggish.

I've seen programs with IF statements that stretch over two or three pages
- maybe 100-150 lines or more. THOSE are fun to debug. My usual
rule-of-thumb is that nesting IFs more than two levels or so calls for
breaking out part of the code into a subroutine.

Excellent point.

There are plenty of old style unstructured programs out there,
with GO TO's, that are easy to debug because they were written
well, and horrid "structured" programs like you describe.
You can have just as big a bowl of spaghetti with structured
code as with unstructured code.

I remember when the "structured code" mania hit the streets,
and what b/s it was. Advocates totally missed the point.

We inherited a moderately sized mainframe system that was
supposedly 'structured' code, but in fact was pure crap.
It's been a nightmare to maintain ever since. It was
originally written by an incompetent programmer because
no one else was available to write the system at the time.

Indeed. As I like to point out, a subroutine call is nothing more
than a GOTO paired with a "come from". The undisciplined use of
subroutine calls can be almost as bad as the undisciplined use of
GOTOs - the main difference is that your spaghetti is running in
double strands.

> I remember when the "structured code" mania hit the streets,
> and what b/s it was. Advocates totally missed the point.

Yup. These people seemed to consider the number of subroutine
calls to be a figure of merit: the more the better. This led
to what I call the "Vegematic" school of programming: run your
code through a food chopper and paste the resulting little pieces
back together with subroutine calls.

Pretty soon you wind up with hundreds of trivially small
subroutines, and co-ordinating them all becomes a large
job that didn't even exist before. I like to think of
it as a victory for bureaucrats, who finally managed to
insinuate their Byzantine methodology into programming.

I've mentioned the story of how a Structured Programming zealot
went up one side of me and down the other for committing the
sin of uttering the profane word GOTO while suggesting ways
to optimize a program whose CPU usage was prohibitively high.
Said genius was the one who declared all subscripts as COMP-3
(packed decimal); simply changing them to COMP-4 (binary)
cut 30% off the CPU time.

early 70s, I wrote a PLI program to analyze assembler listings ...
contructing instruction representation & instruction flow, looking for
register use before set ... also generate psuedo-code representation
using structure if/then/else, while, etc. constructions.

Used for analysis of cp67 and vm370 assembler source listings, one of
the issues is that assembler condition had two-bit condition setting
... and some highly optimized kernel code could effectively make use of
3-way & 4-way condition branch/goto. In some case it could be easily
understood on 60line listing (paper) page ... but converted to
structured psuedo-code could be nested depth >15 that was almost
impossible to understand.

What you are complaining about is incompetence, not SP.

Indeed. And incompetent SP zealots are quite amusing.

They are as long as they are working ELSEwhere.

But "Structured Programming" was introduced with the objective
of improving programmer proficiency.

As CG just mentioned, management liked it. I suspect they liked
it because it made them feel they were actually doing something
in an area they really didn't understand.

It did, enormously, for those who were at least minimally competent.

Before we started teaching top-down design with structured coding
about 10% of Level 1 students managed to take their assignments as
far as demonstrating successful testing.

After only about 10% failed to do so. SP was /very/ successful.

Management have always wanted to pay peanuts and hire monkeys.
They foolishly believe that the latest methodology fad, whatever it
may be, compensates for several million years of primate evolution.

Proficiency test for structured programmers. Write a structured program
ONLY using GOTOs.

Eh? Wot? Not even any assignment statements? :-)

Alright. Since you ask nicely I will allow assignment, IF GOTO,
declaration and I/O statements.
