No, one of the strengths of this standardisation work is that it is done by pure professional bureucrats and some representatives of industrial associations (like ECMA, DIN etc), and that the interface to politics is clearly defined. When it comes to Indonesia they franky admit they cannot make more than a percent or two of the effort that the EU does in this regard, and a more or less verbatim copy makes it far easier to export to the EU. It is only technical standards. The hydro testing interval and visual inspection on diving tanks is pretty immaterial to the welfare, but the coordination of it is. -- mrr

That sounds like Fox News again. There have been a few massive loans bouncing about as the EU tried to rescue some of its poorer countries from starvation as a result of the US financial meltdown. (With a lot of help from the IMF to be sure) It could be said that in the case of the Greeks those loans let the people eat while the corruption in the Greek government was addressed. The incompetent mess is the UK politics leading up to and after BREXIT referendum. The EU is hopefully hanging in there in spite of the current UK omnishambles and the UK’s weaselly cherry-picking over the last 40 years. The EU has succeeded very well in creating wealth and production. It has succeeded even better at equitably increasing the freedom and wealth of ordinary people. It has effortlessly absorbed the wreckage of the USSR satellite countries without any further loss of blood give or take a Balkan bloodbath or two. There is a good case for more, not less, central control. The greek civil service has shown itself to be stupendously incompetent in actually collecting taxes and various fees for services. This is frankly admitted by the current leadership, and was part of their campaign when Syriza was the opposition. Norway and Sweden has actually lent out some teams of tax collectors to try to assist. (Germans or Dutch weren't as welcome, but Scandinavians are generally viewed as friends). -- mrr
