I've long suspected that if she dies before Charles then he will
probably end the monarchy so she's determined to outlive him so his kids
can take it.

If he just reigns a decade or so I don't think it will do
much harm to the monarchy. Sort of like Edward VII.

The younger ones seem to have gotten the gist of being good monarchs, so
I don't think England will become a republic in my lifetime.

I read a book, back in the early 80's, that had the title "Will the Soviet
Union last till 1990?"

"Nonsense, I said to myself"

I read a book with a similar title, but the date was 1984. The one by Andrei
Amalrik.

The problem with capitalism--so often ignored by conservatives--
is the lack of a true free market.

Capitalism is based on having a true free market, where buyers
and sellers have full knowledge, can trade freely with each
other, and vendors can freely join in.

But once an economy grows, the true free market ceases. It
gets skewed. Buyers and sellers do not have free knowledge,
people can not come and go freely. Adam Smith's "unseen hand"
fails to work.

This was recognized over 100 years ago by Theodore Roosevelt
and others even earlier, when the US federal govt became
regulating the marketplace. But the problems with the markets
continued until the great depression when everything crashed.

Today, the clock has turned back and we again see monopoly
power and high concentration of wealth and economic power.

The problem with any economic system is that it must work
for humanity. We have a mix of physical and emotional
needs that no one theory is going to fit.

I recommend using less theory and more adaptive rules.
Like we do now, a little capitalism, a little socialism,
whatever works for this time and place.

I'm ideologically wedded to freedom and democracy.

Whether or not the people want to pay more taxes for more social services is,
however, up to them.

I have, though, my own ideas on how to make sense of all this.

There had always been the rich and the poor. But in ancient times, the rich got
that way by being rulers - by taking their money in taxes. So the emergence of
a merchant class was a progressive step.

Capitalism got a bad rap around the time of the Industrial Revolution.

The steam engine let big businessmen undercut individual craftsmen. And as
workers, they had little choice but to accept the pittances offered by
employers.

It helped that Britain didn't have an open frontier. There would have been no
cheap labor force to exploit if people could go and feed themselves by hunting
and fishing, or go West and homestead.

And so, while the problem can be made worse by Bad People, the ideology that
says that the problem is caused by Bad People is mistaken. The real problem is
that when there's just barely enough to go around, the common man is vulnerable
to serious consequences from any shift in circumstances. What's needed is a
balance between population and the environment that includes a margin of safety.

Also take into account that during the Industrial Revolution British

What's needed is rich people who will *not* continually make products worse
in order to make a couple of dollars more. What's needed is business men
with a social conscience who will *not* move factories to China or services
to India to short-change the consumer and give away jobs that could be done
well at home.

There are some, but they're rare enough to be remarkable. There was one
guy in Mass a couple of years ago whose factory burned down. He kept all
his employees on the payroll for a year or so until he rebuilt.

The company that just bought Time Warner Cable is advertising that they are
moving all the customer support positions back to the US.

A lot of consumers/victims do not like to deal with overseas callcenters, in

Also needed are rich people who will actually invest their money
into a working facility that creates jobs and goods and services.
Today, far too many wealthy just trade on the stock exchanges.
Others buy and sell companies, making huge commissions and profits
at the expense of everyone else.

Actually, as mentioned, this isn't anything new, but a problem that
goes back 100 years. However, back in the 1950s and 1960s companies
actually invested in their plants and treated their workers well,
allowing the standard of living to grow and creating more demand
for their products.

But today, the stockholders are obsessed with instant and high
returns on investment, nothing more. People buy stock in a company
thinking you will buy it from them tomorrow and they'll make a profit;
regardless of whatever that company is--they don't care.

It's so sad that today, when a company announces layoffs, its
stock goes up and management applauded for being "efficient".

The laws of thermodynamics say that if you want water to move uphill, you had
better bring your own pump.

So, rather than expecting a better class of rich people to emerge
spontaneously, the government needs to interfere in the market by legislating
tariffs. Which means changes to international trade agreements to permit this
once more.

Who doesn't want freedom. But there have to limits to even that.

As far as democracy, most "democratic" nations use a representative
form of government. Pure democracy leads to stuff like BREXIT.
Not really a good thing.
