Most owners of ZX80/81, Spectrum, BBC B et al. did little more with them than type in programs from magazines, save them to cassette and play the games - that's if they didn't just buy the games and occasionally other software. People then were saying that these ready built toys didn't teach you the fundamentals like building an IMSAI and blowing your own boot ROMs did. The interested few will always dig deeper, with those old machines you hit the bottom quite quickly (unless you went into integrated circuit design and manufacture) with a Pi you can dig a lot longer before you hit the bottom learning all the way. Installation, linux CLI, linux admin, linux internals, filesystems, ARM assembler, pi device drivers, pi booting mechanism, ... it's all open to inspection and learning apart from some proprietary details of the SOC and once you know enough to understand fully what is hidden you know a great deal indeed. The details are far more open and available than they were on say a BBC micro, a simple example the source code for the BASIC on the BBC micro was not published, if you wanted to know exactly how some aspect of it worked you had to disassemble it and work it out without the benefit of comments. The hardware was far from open either, there were big ULAs with a lot of undocumented (outside of Acorn) circuitry in them. The same is true of the ZX81, Spectrum and pretty much anything after the Acorn Electron (ZX80 is a notable exception - no ULAs all TTL you could reverse engineer that hardware easily, it was probably the last such). By contrast the source code for everything apart from some firmware is freely available for the Pi, and it's not hard to find people who will help you understand bits of it when you get stuck. There's a lot of it, the sheer volume is perhaps daunting, but a lot of people have learned enough to contribute usefully to it. The hardware for the Pi is not open - but by the time you know enough to care you will undoubtedly have learned about those SOCs which are if your interests take you that way. You can also go the other way and use the Pi as a controller and learn just enough about computing to get it to do what you want it to while doing real hardware engineering. There is one significant difference between the Pi and something like the BBC B. It was reasonably easy for one person to understand all the details of how a BBC B worked (at least if you had access to the sources for the ROMs) from the highest abstractions of the software to the lowest details of the signals on the PCB tracks. So just for starters consider the size of the Linux codebase, there's several million lines of C plus a fair bit of assembler (rather more assembler than you could fit on a BBC). That would take years just to read the source never mind understand what it compiles to which is the level of detail we're talking about. That level of detail was possible with a 6502 or Z80 machine running a BASIC written by one or two people over a few months, not for a Pi running a codebase that is the result of hundreds of man years of work spread over more than twenty years. If it were not possible for human minds to understand the Arm architecture, then the Foundation could not have come up with the design for the Pi.

RSX-11M? Operating system technology has advanced considerably
in the 40+ years since RSX-11M was written. You've no clue what
modern operating systems must do.

The foundation used existing ARMv7 parts, which were instantiations
of ARM provided IP. Creating a mainboard using an existing chip
is quite straightfoward - it doesn't mean that the "foundation"
has any clue about the architecture or design of the processor
internals.
The ARMv8 ARM[*] is almost 6000 pages. It takes a team of
dozens of engineers to create an implementation of that architecture.
[*] Architecture Reference Manual, and that doesn't include the
interrupt controller or IOMMU which add another couple thousand
pages.
