Yes, but these computers had special architectural features - they were stack-
based, they had tagged storage - that made them unconventional. Algol, as
opposed to C, might not be as well-suited to writing an operating system for a
conventional computer.

True, but you don't need to add a lot to the language, and it was a
'dialect'.

An example of a rather Algol-like language is Edinburgh IMP - pretty
standard Algol-like language, but just the addition of bit manipulation
and 'maps' made it suitable for writing operating systems.

That's not completely correct - the medium systems were BCD memory-to-memory
machines with variable length operands (up to 100 units (digits or bytes)).

I suspect that ALGOL, with certain extensions such as Burroughs did for
the Large system line, would be perfectly suitable for writing an operating
system for e.g. x86 processors.

BCPL was fine for Tripos and early AmigaDOS.

I agree! And for a load of other stuff I wrote (e.g. terminal
concentrators on PDP-11 and Z80).

Apart from the annoying apostrophes (who is _REALLY_ going to
be inconvenienced by not having INTEGER as a variable name???)
CORAL was a useful high level low level language.

Weird. I have the CORAL definition book on my desk right now.

CORAL needed a better 'IF' statement. Basically () brackets that worked.

I can see nothing in the definition about such a stropping convention.

I conclude that it was an implementation choice.

'twas a Perkin Elmer (formerly Interdata) compiler, so that you could
have INTEGER as a variable name thus ...

'INTEGER' INTEGER

Well, yes. Had you said "documentation" instead of "definition", I would fault
a manufacturer's language manual for not actually telling you how to type
programs in.

But in this case, that is the same situation as existed for ALGOL. The language
definition put words like *begin* and *end* in _boldface_, and, therefore, many
implementors were under the impression that implementing the language with
reserved words would be, at least, contrary to the spirit of the definition.

Thus, IBM's version of ALGOL for the System/360 adopted this same convention of
putting quotes around all the keywords. ALGOL W, on the other hand, just used
reserved words.

That was also a characteristic of many implementations of ALGOL.

C has been somewhat successful in this regard. :-/

Other efforts with good success are subsets of PL/1, especially the
Prime SPL compiler; a very fast implementation.

Otherwise, bliss or fortran if you have to make do. Or, even
COBOL.

But I would prefer a structured language that is lean and clean,
but not quite to the straightjacket of Pascal.

One interesting OS implementation here is QNX, where the kernel is a few K, but
does not even have a file system. All of those are priviliged services. And can
be written in any user space language.

Note that all of you keep assuming that a compiler exists before the
never-produced soft/hardware of a system is created. That's not
how it worked in the aulden days.

It's certainly true that something has to begin the process of bootstrapping...
and that something will have to be in machine language.

However, it would merely need to be as little as a loader program, as one could
always use a compiler on another system to write a cross-compiler. People did
that sometimes even in the olden days.

The Burroughs systems, given as an example, were of some vintage. Also, the
discussion may have been about how one would write an operating system today,
not back then.

Yep, another approach that was used (originated I think) with BCPL
was to ship the compiler as source and compiled for a very simple virtual
machine (although it was called an intermediate code not a virtual machine
in those days) designed to be easy to write an interpreter or translator
for. Compiling the compiler made a great test of your work because it
should produce output identical to that in the kit.

You could then go on to write a better (optimising perhaps) code
generator in BCPL having bootstrapped yourself to a (fairly) HLL easily.

I did my M.Sc. dissertation on that.

With an interpreter written in Standard FORTRAN.

I did it for fun with a translator written in 6809 assembler.

Oh, I've done that too. But I was aiming for portability, of course. The
interpretive code was closely packed into fixed format 'records' that
would work on any machine that had a reasonable FORTRAN implementation.
