CDC couldn't satisfy most of IBM customers, and IBM couldn't satisfy most of CDC customers. As Watson Jr himself wrote, IBM was a Detroit mass-market car builder, while CDC was a specialty limited edition sports car builder. The problem with IBM was that they wanted to be a sports car builder as well, and tried it, but that was an area they didn't really understand. As to CDC, well, some of their people became unhappy and broke off to form another company. Also, I'm not sure CDC even still exists today.

Well, IBM lost Gene Amdahl just as CDC lost Seymour Cray. IBM was a company well known for building computers, and building big computers. So when the government wanted a powerful computer, IBM seemed like a good place to go to; hence the NORC and then later the STRETCH. The STRETCH - and even the Model 91 - were disappointments for IBM. But the Model 85 did better than expected, and combining the 85's cache with the 91's pipeline led to the Model 195... and today cache, and deep pipelines that use methods equivalent to the Tomasulo algorithm for register renaming... are characteristics of an awful lot of the microprocessors out there. So IBM was far from lacking in technical competence. IBM was a sales-driven company, not a techology-driven company. Which isn't a bad thing; a company should, first and foremost, be in the business of making things people will actually want to buy. Ideally, sales and technology should be balanced - what you can sell, and what you can make, are both vital considerations if your trying to make something to sell! Since business data processing was IBM's bread and butter, its habits led it to emphasize reliability in its machines. Well, scientific users often tie up even the fastest machines for runs that go for hours on end, so that's not necessarily wasted effort. John Savard

In the 1950s, the ERA division of Univac was known for building powerful computers. They had a lot of military contracts left over from their war service. Unfortunately, Remington Rand made a lot of stupid business decisions that lost Univac's dominance in the field. I don't know the pricing, but I think the CDC machine was cheaper than the equivalent horsepower IBM machine. I'm not sure if the scientific customers who wanted to do number crunching were as concerned with S/360 compatibility, but that compatibility was very important to IBM. Perhaps if IBM set up a separate design group--as they did for the PC--to design and build a super computer, the result would've been better price performance and earlier delivery (though not S/360 compatibility). IBM's competitors amazingly didn't get it--they had superior technology (Watson Jr admits it), but didn't relate to their customers. Even more amazing was the failure of GE and RCA, since both had industrial sales. Part of the reason we could get VS1 running with higher throughput under VM ... than stand alone, was 1) VS1 (& DOS/VS) implemented 2k virtual pages ... for early 370 environment when real stoarge was significantly constrained ... late 70s, 1mbyte and larger memory sizes ... VS1 had single 4mbyte virtual address space with 2k pages, VS1 handshaking defined 4mbyte virtual machine with 1-to-1 mapping between VS1 virtual address space and the virtual machine address space ... and let VM370 do the paging with more efficient 4k page sizes (for the larger real storage). 2) I did much more efficient page replacement algorithm in VM370 and page i/o subsystem with much shorting pathlength (than VS1). http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#clock however, the initial transition from cp67 to vm370 dropped a lot of my code, with less efficient algorithms and significantly increased pathlength. During FS, 370 efforts were being shutdown, but I continued to do 360&370 stuff all during the Future System period ... even periodically rediculing FS activity (which wasn't exactly career enhancing activity) http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/submain.html#futuresys and one of my hobbies was providing production operating systems to internal datacenters (initially cp67 and then later vm370). When FS imploded, there was mad rush to get stuff back in 370 product pipelines ... which contributed to decision to release lots of my stuff that I had moved to VM370. When POK convinced corporation to kill vm370 and move all the people to POK to support MVS/XA ... Endicott had to reconstitute a development group from scratch. The VMSHARE archives (online computer conferencing that TYMSHARE made free to SHARE user group organization starting in Aug1976) has some amount to say about their code quality during this period. http://vm.marist.edu/~vmshare Besides code quality, the reconstituted development group tended to be composed of people with traditional operating system backgrounds ... focused on implementing feature/function with little concern about pathlengths. They were also implementing stuff inside the vm370 monitor that had no business there ... should have instead been done outside the kernel in virtual address spaces. One of the issues is that it was significantly easier to understand how to add code to small, compact, straight forward monitor kernel ... but after some number of years with large number of people doing that, it became to look like spaghetti code in traditional operating systems ... looosing all concept of KISS (and "it isn't done when there is nothing left to add, it is done when there isn't anything left to remove"). -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

Head of POK also played some corporate dirty tricks because a datacenter vm370 cluster of 4300s were also significantly cheaper than high-end mainframes, more aggregate processing and I/O, much lower environmental resources and floorspace. The communication group tried to block making mainframe TCP/IP product available ... there was big battle which they finally lost ... and they then changed tactics ... since they had corporate strategic responsibility for everything that crossed the datacenter walls ... TCP/IP had to be released through them. The resulting product release to customers would consume a 3090 processor getting 44kbytes/sec. I then did the enhancements for RFC1044 and in some tuning tests at Cray Research between a Cray and 4341 ... got 4341 channel speed throughput using only modest amount of 4341 processor ... possibly 500 times improvement in bytes moved per instruction executed. some past posts http://manana.garlic.com/~lynn/subnetwork.html#1044 Both the communication group and the POK highend mainframe ... would engage in all sorts of activity trying to protect their status quo. -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

A book could be written on the subject, so a couple of paragraphs is only a bare snippet, but here goes anyway... First, DEC was not way ahead of the market by the late 70s. "The market" had caught up by then, which is part of the reason why DEC was propelled during that period into a $3 billion (10**9, for our European readers) computer company, the second largest in the world. DEC was selling exactly what the market wanted. (Vaxen, mostly.) But the market kept moving and DEC didn't keep pace. If you know anything about the Clock Tower Project in the early '80s, you would know that the upper management, up to and including Ken Olsen, were very worried about falling behind in the emerging personal computer market. What resulted was the Rainbow, the first of many of their well-known stumbles in that area. I think Olsen, Bell, and the rest foresaw the move towards commodity computing. What they failed to recognize was just how fast and how far businesses were willing to go towards that end. They were steeped in an engineering background, and believed that a quality product, in the sense of being well-designed, would win out. But what history has shown us over and over in many areas is that cost usually wins out over quality. Of course, DEC's downfall was a lot more complicated than that. But it's a theme that gets repeated. Consider the Alpha chip or the Altavista search engine. Excellent technical achievements in their day, but that alone does not guarantee success.
