However, this _does_ mean they can't avoid reporting it on their taxes, and while the relevant taxes aren't withheld, they _do_ get withheld from their next paycheck. Servers can choose not to report some/all of their cash tips to the govt, which given their pitiful wages, often means the difference between collecting welfare (worth thousands of dollars per month) and being homeless. Plenty of youthful cashiers are very helpful and not dependent on the store computer. Indeed, I think kids today are more polite and helpful than we were back in my day.

I afree that many are competent in making math calculations as cashiers. But I come across many who don't. I talked about this before I retired to people I worked with. Several denied it happened. I have noticed that the type of restaurant is immaterial. I saw it just as often at pricey, $20-30 for lunch, restaurants as at low priced places to eat at. -- JimP.
