If we can't trust companies like Juniper not to have back doors in their software, nor companies like Microsoft not to have 0-day vulnerabilities, what makes you think a 10-year-old Chevy is going to be more secure? And it doesn't require every automobile to be compromised. 10K would be plenty to create quite a mess. 10K (0.04%) of the ~260M registered motor vehicles in the US.

That will knock drivers' hands off the wheel and probably disorient them long enough to hit something, and they won't have a working airbag to absorb the impact. And having both have a common set of gateways to the outside world is asking for trouble. Yes, it will probably work well. For a long time, even. it may outlast us. If you can get to that, you've potentially got access to damn near everything that's interfaced with the vehicle's microprocessors. Note that one of the recent exploits got access by presenting a specially crafted .WMA file to the vehicle's entertainment system.

With a network-wide access mechanism with a good-sized hole, and a decent size botnet (>100k) connecting to all of the US cars could theoretically be done well within a day. (~2000 per day per bot; should be doable). If they were so accessible, that is. If the hole requires some real hacking/cracking, much longer. If you need to be in wifi range of the car with a special-ish device; a lot longer. And then we are into more realistic assumptions. We don't need to attach to all the cars. A year's production moving through one dealer chain in a few-state area would be more than enough to make a 9/11 size terrorist attack. A terrorist attack could be programming a few thousand cars, and taking them over at just the right moment, and directing a good portion of them to speed and crash towards one specific target. (Having gotten live credentials and links to take over the cars up front, but not doing anything before T-day.) In terms of fuel, two-three hundred cars have around as much fuel as a large jetliner. And around as many people onboard. And a mass of around 10 times the jetliners and a speed of somewhat more than a tenth. Bigger moment, smaller kinetic energy. If you have control over ~10k cars in a few-state area having a few hundred of them near some terrorist attraction should be possible at any non-rush hour but still active driving time. This would of course assume that the terrorists know how to do technology. The current indications from Daesh are pretty clear that they cannot even handle simple encryption. Al Qaeda seem a little more advanced, but I think 9/11 was about as far as they could push it in terms of technology. Driving cars remotely is something I would say is beyond them for at least a few decades. I would be more concerned about our own, RAF etc.(that has resurfaced in Germany after decades of underground life). -- mrr

If your scenario was at all viable, some terrorist group would be using it to destroy airliners already. Or are you unaware that any modern airliner is capable of taking off, flying to its destination, and landing with no human on board?

If modern aircraft can be remote controlled then all the commands and telemetry need to use a Message Authorisation Code (MAC) whose secret key variable contains at least 256 bits. To prevent replay the message should contain the source, destination, current time and date. If any are wrong discard the message.
