Why take a chance? In most jobs, death is not part of the normal
job terms. A sane candidate would almost certainly go that way.
Confidence that one will not be hanged and not being hanged are
not the same.

True, it does prevent any incumbents from scheming to remain in power which ought to go a long way to reducing pork barrel politics. I'd love a better scheme, it's often been said that the best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship - provided there's a mechanism to ensure that the dictator is always benevolent. So when they take office you start two petitions, one that they should be rewarded, the other that they should be punished. Anybody can sign either at any time (if they've already signed the other this removes that signature). At the end of the term the electee is rewarded or punished proportional to the extent that the relevant list exceeds the other. You've exchanged certainly getting executed at the start of their term to certainly getting executed at the end of their term; I doubt you'll find anyone willing run unless they're terminally ill, which I suppose is an improvement. However, electing only the terminally ill means most of them will die of natural causes _during_ their term. We'll need a lot more special elections (or promotions of the vice dictator?), and then you have to consider whether it's fair to execute someone who served less than a full term. Serve n years and out, where n is somewhere around ten. That could be worded into law and be pretty bulletproof. Is there any sane person who thinks that is not a good idea? What are the chances of passing such a bill? How about zero? We are captives of what was written down ca. 1778 and is still acceptable to modest numbers of people. The old guys were excellent but they were not perfect.
