So they may have UK citizenship because their parent was from there. There's not some blanket UK citizenship bestowed upon Canadians, we gave that up at some point. I think there were relaxed entry requirements for Commonwealth citizens, but probably some of that is gone because you need a passport for security reasons. Michael

Security theater. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that drugs are big money, and that it is a natural evolution of the trade to go high-tech and develop a serious smuggling network with the means to bypass high-school educated drug warriors guarding points of entry. The only drug smugglers who are at serious risk of interdiction are the amateurs, and hence the flow of heroin across borders is not meaningfully impacted by border service agencies. Where I come from heroin is basically a strategic resource to privileged consumers and as a matter of necessity (to them) it does not seem to me that border controls as you describe them are meant to do much more than interfere with amateur competition to the entrenched state-sanctioned interests. -- We all cannot be intelligent, but at least we can all be polite.

A passport merely establishes identity and nationality, and countries may allow other means to do the same. Entry without visa may be granted to persons of certain nationalities, but that is a completely separate matter from passports. This is true, the fine wording on the UK passport ("Her Brittanic
Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and requires in the name of Her
Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely
without let or hinderance and to afford the bearer such assistance and
protection as may be necessary.") has precisely no practical meaning, but
it does look impressive.

Then we instantly had the english King's sympathy for the newly independent country. The Swedes didn't catch up to this one before it was too late. They were way to cought up in their relations with Germany. For Britain, having a friendly, neutral well armed country guarding their backs instead of having it in the hands of a half-unfriendly, german-leaning one was so important that other matters got to be polished over. -- mrr
