It was only later that the `ugly' side revealed itself. The King of England was, as AFAIK, the Queen is, the head of the Church of England, and that church disapproved of divorce. There were lots of `Nazi' sympathisers in the UK, the great majority fell into line when War was declared, but even later, Hess flew to the UK to get in contact with, I believe, the Duke of Hamilton, and the Russians always believed that there was a theme of sympathy. Lots of rich American daughters had been married off to the impoverished English aristocracy. Wallis Simpson was `common' and not wanted. Later, many of those class in the UK had the same idea about Mrs. Thatcher. -- greymaus . . ...

The Depression was very tough, and many people saw it as a failure of capitalism, which it was, and sought a replacement. We all know that Thomas J. Watson, Sr, president of IBM, accepted a medal from Germany. At least he finally recognized what Germany was truly about and publicly denounced and returned the medal. Fortunately, FDR came along and managed to reform capitalism and the government enough to give people hope and stick with the mainstream. Ironically, WW II provided the economic boom to finally end the Depression.

This implies that if the government really cared about unemployment, it would be able do what was necessary to fix it, instead of only being willing to do so when there was a war, and we wouldn't need wars any more. My history of WW I is somewhat vague, but I think WW I was followed by a nasty recession. Postwar conversion didn't go very well. I think the Roaring Twenties was more fueled by (1) easy credit, (2) high consuming spending, and (3) new technology products. Electricity was growing, and people were getting appliances. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaring_twenties IMHO, the too-easy credit and fraudulent business practices that caused the 1929 bust were similar to those that caused the 2007 bust. In both cases, people and companies were spending money that (a) they didn't have and (b) didn't have realistic hopes of having in the future. In other words, they were borrowing money they could not pay back. Further, many financial securities were based on fraudulent representation, be it fake mortgages or fake watered stocks. Compounding the problem was that everyone was having such a great time and making money no one wanted to be the bad guy and say "this is wrong", we must slow down. > It seems that throughout history wars have been followed by economic booms - > followed by slumps that only another war can end. This is the famous war - boom > - bust cycle. > > This implies that if the government really cared about unemployment, it would > be able do what was necessary to fix it, instead of only being willing to do so > when there was a war, and we wouldn't need wars any more. I think anyone who truly understands economics knows that the politicians' promise of "full employment" is a lie. It's just not possible in our free market economy. What realistic liberals try to do is provide a _cushioning_ of unemployment benefits to help tide people over until they can get a job again. Sure, sometimes there is deliberate subsidies to create jobs, but mostly it's just insurance. In recent years, conservatives have attacked insurance. They fail to understand the hardships people endured in industrial regions (they couldn't grow their own food) and that some external sustenance support was better for business and social stability.

The >royalty *wanted* to get rid of King Edward VIII... because he was a Nazi >sympathizer. The sympaties were jumbled in Western Europe all the way up to the Kristallnacht, 10-11 november 1938; when the Nazis showed their true colours. Edward VIII abdicated december 11th 1936, almost two years earlier. The nazis had a plan for taking over the world, and followed it quite well until the Soviets broke them ca 1942. This plan included "staying good" until they had complete control over Germany (and Austria plus various outlying areas). This was accomplished ca August/September 1938, 5 1/2 years into their government. Jan-May 1933 : Taking control over german goverment, but keeping it in Weimar constitutional terms. June 1933 - May 1935 : Slowly subverting legislation, bureaucracy, courts, banking/finance, railroads, newspapers and getting all the oppisition curtailed; but by using the subverted courts in made-up civilian charges. Outwardly they tried to look good, and they used the Weimar legislation in subverted form. June 1935 - September 1938 : Militarising germany, also silently. Taking over Saarland and rolling back the Versailles treaty, one piece at a time. Eventually ended in the "Anschluss" of Austria. Then, in october 1938 the party leadership were sufficiently secure in their command of Germany to let the goons loose. There are meeting minutes making this abundantly clear. Edward 8ths abdication was just into the third period, and they were not seen as the menace they were, because they had "shown their good side" since May 1933. It was the "Anschluss" and the "Kristallnacht" that woke up liberal Europe. Up to then it was somewhat comme-il-faut to have some Nazi sympaties. -- mrr

But she was still a princess, although a special one. -- mrr

So she changed from Her Highness Princess Elizabeth to Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth in 1936. John Savard

In New York City, they have a position called "Borough President". I'm not sure what they actually do, beyond preside over many ceremonial events. Some seem manage to get indicted.

Most British subjects were granted citizenship in their respective dominion during the transition from Empire to Commonwealth; Canada was in 1949. They retained dual nationality until 1983, when "subject" status was limited to persons with no other nationality* and certain subjects born in Ireland before 1949. * It is a general principle of international law that a nationality cannot be rescinded if doing so would leave a person stateless. I knew someone from Canada, but as such she had some sort of Commonwealth status. She said her passport was good throughtout not only the British Commonwealth, but also throughout the European Union. (FWIW, she retained her Canadian citizenship for a long time, then finally becomming an American citizen.)
