Changes of course continued from 1970 to today, but there were more evolutionary than revolutionary. --widespread use of air conditioning --widespread of use of jet planes for fast travel --cheap telecommunications (big drop in off peak long distance charges in 1971) --dispersal of families over the country --televison --computers --sexual revolution --acceptance of minorities --acceptance of women --peak out of heavy industry --distrust of government (Vietnam, Watergate legacy) --less rigid conformity on hair styles, clothing styles (my school dropped its dress code in 1970, and jeans ruled from then on). --decline of rigid hierarchial comamnd structure in business and family. To put it another way, a kid entering college in 1970 vs. 1945 would find enormous changes in school life. But a kid in 1970 wouldn't find it that much different in 2015. For instance, a kid in 1945 would be shocked to have a black roommate and know nothing about computers, no biggie in 1970 nor 2015. In 1970, while there was still much heavy industry, the rust belt clearly had begun its decay. It didn't take long to discover the auto, steel, and railroad industries had troubles.

The world, or at least the country, probably changed as much between 1840 and 1890 as the recent past: telegraph, railroads, steamships. In 1840 most of the country was a blank on the map, but by 1890 it had been settled with towns and farms. The Civil War and the end of slavery, electric lights (and gas before that). I forgot to mention in my previous post that around the 1970s some students in Canada (McGill maybe) tossed a CDC Cyber system out a window or something. What wee they protesting? -- Pete

I'd go along with the "recentism" assessment, but social changes 1945-1970
mostly tech-driven were quite profound. But that was also true of 1920-
1945.
A related thought about perception of time and change: when I was in school
in the mid-fifties to mid-sixties we had Remembrance Day ceremonies. WW II
was only 10-20 years in the past, but to me it was a lifetime before,
although clearly it was well within the memory of any adult at the time. WW
I on the other hand was truly ancient history. I was astounded to learn
that one of my junior high teachers was in it.
My own children participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies in the 90's.
Then I had this realization: they were farther from WW II than I had been
from WW I at the same age.

For everyday people, especially the masses, there wasn't that much change as there would be later. By 1920, the telephone was invented and in wide use. It was in wider use by 1945, but its radical growth would occur after the war. Same with automobiles--they were around, but the really big growth was postwar. Flying was limited to the wealthy and the masses still used the train. Indeed, it wasn't until about 1955, after four engine pressurized planes took over that flying became preferable to the train for business travellers. People commuted to work on foot or by trolley in both 1920 and 1945. It wasn't until the postwar era that the automobile really exploded among the masses and in the new suburbia. Factories were factories, and not that much different between 1920 and 1945. Social attitudes changed somewhat, but were mostly the same. Radio did come along and was very widespread by 1945. When I was in elementary school, the principal was related to John McCrae (I can't remember the relationship, but the principal had the same last name), the author of "In FLanders Field". I remember assemblies in elementary school on Remembrance Day, but I'm blank about high school in the seventies. I'd point out that when "2001" came out in 1968, I did the math and thought I'd be old when that year came around, 41. It didn't seem old when 2001 rolled around, and looking back to 1968 is much closer than looking forward from 1968 to 2001. Michael

Yes, I was replying to a bit that mentiond both wars. It may have been an
abrupt jump, but I was going into the fact taht Remembrance Day was still
actually being observed.

Some biology students thought a professor was racist, giving them lower marks than they deserved, so there was a sit in, which ended up with them trashing the computer which was on the same floor. I don't think that was the plan at the beginning, they took over the administration floor (I think) and the computer happened to be there. I don't think it got tossed, but lots of computer cards and stuff were sent out the window (I recall the building had sealed windows, so they must have gotten broken) and there was a fire in the computer or computer room, so whatever the fire didn't do, the water damage putting it out did. My mother the demonstrator (biology that is) said the professor wasn't racist, but I have no idea if that's a proper assessment or she just knew the guy too well to believe it. It wouldn't have happend in some other time. The racism issue would probably come up, but it wouldn't play out the same way. Everything was up for grabs then, and we didn't even have the Vietnam War to fuss withdraw from (in the US, at least the occupation of Columbia University was against expansion into Harlem, and war research). So there was an easy trigger to a lot of things, and again since that sort of thing was happening elsewhere, it was pretty easy to cross the line and trash the computer, even if technically we didn't have the SDS here. Our school had a 'sit in' and nobody knew what or why we were doing it, it just was fun to do. The book, "The Ungovernable City", goes into detail about the Columbia University riots, and that was an excuse to protest; the expansion into Harlem was a complete non-issue. For one thing, it wasn't an expansion into Harlem though protesters claimed it was. Ironically, the university was trying to provide Harlem residents with more access to university facilities, but the troublemakers made mash out of that.

Working class youth was more worried about getting on the next rung on the ladder, than rioting or protesting. About the civil rights people who went to the South in those times to help with voter registration, etc, was that the black males down South notices that their girl friends were attracted to the generally well-off and educated (with the attended prospects) white guys. When I was young, we had paraffin lamps for lighting, rainwater for drinking, and a larder for keeping food. The Electrolux salesmen arrived after electricity was installed, and it was all downhill after that :).
