But it's fun - and English has stolen words from so
many other languages that James Nicoll's quote is
both witty and true.

Do you mean "ARAF"?  Why would Welsh have to borrow a word for "slow"?

I think Apple ran an ad once about how the Macintosh
was available with Welsh or Icelandic support, as
opposed to Windows, which wasn't.

However, since then, it has become possible to connect
a color monitor to the Macintosh, and Windows has
expanded its language support options.

It’s been borrowing at least since the Welsh fought the Romans. A lot of
borrowings from Latin.

I found the Irish approach to Gaelic to be refreshingly mature
compared to French in Quebec.

Still, I appreciate their efforts to keep the language alive.
On our trip to Ireland in 2017 I enjoyed listening to the
recorded announcements on the train - the voice was so
beautiful that it even made mundane announcements like
"please keep your feet off the seats" sound like poetry.

The Irish attitude toward Gaelic is refreshingly mature
compared to Quebec's attitude toward French.

The Welsh have a better attitude. There is something in Finnish at the
moment, I think, about making English a second official language.

As far as I can make out, Tolkien's books have a kinda Finnish
undertone.

This is a well known fact among those who have studied JRRT's languages and his
writings about them, as well as his biography.

One of his Elvish languages' grammatical and phonoligical features were greatly
influenced by Finnish.

Another was greatly influenced by Welsh in the same way, as it happens.

	Well yes, Gaelic is what they speak in Scotland here it's Irish or
Gaeilge in Gaeilge. Some people even get upset when it's called Gaelic but
most will trot out that correction with a smile.

Naively I'd hoped that the UK Brexit customs "border" (in the Irish Sea) would make it easier for the people in the North to realise they're better off trading with no tariffs to the RoI.

	Well the Republicans have thought that all along. The Unionists
OTOH are less than pleased with the idea especially as they were given a
flat guarantee it wouldn't happen and failed to notice that contradictory
guarantees were also being made (and believed) at the same time by the
same people. They're an unhappy bunch these days, feeling a bit abandoned
and kicked from what I can tell and things are always so much easier when
both sides are not unhappy.

Many British dialects are impenetrable to outsiders. Being a native English
speaker had nothing to do with it. Of course Germany has a lot of areas
where they speak dialect, too.
