Not too many years ago someone where i worked told me oxygen was an explosive. I mentioned he breathed it in. Oh no he replied, that's air ! I pointed out that oxygen is part of air. And he should be more careful when he inhales. Next day my boss told me while that was techically funny, I shouldn't do that. I pointed out politely, that is why the information he wanted took longer than usual. The guy kept interrupting me. He shook his head and said try getting rid of them some other way. I said I wouldn't break any rules. Then he started to say something else, but walked away mumbling to himself. I think the next time that guy looked like he was headed for my cube, he was headed off by someone. At least he never bothered me again. Which is what I wanted to happen. -- Jim

However, if you have 25% oxygen in the atmosphere, just about anything will start burning uncontrollably. There was an accident close to where I work a few years ago. Somebody did some grinding in an enclosed space, and the oxygen concentration in that space were elevated. (Why the required measuement beforehand was not pefromed, I don't know). After a spark fell on his clothing (which was flame-resistant, but not at elevated temperatures), it all burned off in a flash. He didn't survive.

In this case, it was a vessel which was emtpy and dry. It was the oxygen which was the problem. On a less somber note, Asimov wrote a detective story in which the violent reaction of oxygen under pressure with just about anything organic played an imporant role. The bad guy tried to murder the protagonist by smearing glycerol on an oxygen container. Asimov certainly knew his way around a lab, he was a chemist, after all.

I know one person who, on deciding that the motorbike tank with some fuel in it *must* be welded, very carefully filled it to the brim with petrol, put the cap on and washed the outside of the tank before welding it. His reasoning was that if he left no room for fumes or air he should be safe, he lived to tell the tale (while showing me the welded tank) so he probably wasn't totally crazed. I remember one day in the fifties waking up to the sound of the Us air force flying to Britain over our place, I think it was the Suez crises, and the family agreed to fil some plastic drums with petrol and bury them in the garden in case of things going bad, naturally, it took a while to return to normal and by that time, the petrol was polluted with water, so I threw the petrol away and tried to use the druns for something else. That was when I learned to dump such things.

On a less calamitous note....
Neighborhood improvement scenario: Thuggish bullies are variously
harassing, robbing, assaulting etc. you/neigbor{hood}/whoever.
Boozers, heavy smokers, general louts. You fill a couple of party
balloons with oxygen/acetylene mixture and hang them from rearview
mirror in the thugs' car while they're off doing some mischief or
other. On returning to the car, one expostulates, "What's with this
f***ing balloon sh*t?" and pops one with his cigarette. Only
enculpating trace material left for forensic team is charred &
shrivelled balloon remnants amongst the beer cans, burger wrappers,
empty cigarette packs etc.
(Risk from static electricity while preparing this deterrent occurs to
me.)

Love it. Reminds me of a scene from _The 100-Year-Old Man
Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared_ by Jonas Jonasson.
Delightful book.

Probably wouldn't pop so nicely.

If it's full of oxygen and acetylene it will pop just fine.

I always thought mylar balloons would be more pop-resistant than rubber ones, but I could be wrong - I haven't tried it myself. :-) -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | "Some of you may die, \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | but it's sacrifice X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | I'm willing to make." / \ if you read it the right way. | -- Lord Farquaad (Shrek)
