No, it was the then pretty much standard Gilbert which had just about everything you needed but the manual was pretty skimpy. Looking at an online copy of the Golden Book I'm tempted to set up a chem lab, because a lot of those experiments look interesting.

Now that I think of it, I'm almost sure that in some chemistry class or another (high school?) we actually did taste suitably diluted samples of sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, and noted that they tasted sour. Diluted bases taste bitter. The dose makes the poison.

You know that, and I know that, and any chemist or biologist knows that (I hope) but the do-gooders who want to protect all from EEEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIIILLLLLL don't seem to understand that. They would ban oxygen and water if they could, after all both are toxic at high enough doses so they must be poison at any dose.

On the other hand, literally anything I can order online seems to be known to cause cancer in the state of California.

I understand that the situation in California is that if you don't label it and the state decides it causes cancer then you're in big trouble, but if you do label it and it doesn't they don't do anything to you, so the default is to label everything. Like an aluminum stepladder is "known to cause cancer".
