	If the cursor isn't on the lines it's probably quicker to use the
line numbers. But then I'm more likely to move to the first line use <n>dd
or <n>yy then move to the insertion point and hit P or p. There are *so*
very many ways of doing things in vi - it's amazing that we had to wait for
perl to get tmowtdi coined.

In Emacs I'd probably move to first line.
I have large plus key bound to delete line, hit the plus key
until it's all gone.
Move to where I want it,
Yank it:  ^y

Most everything I move is done that way.

Copying is done the same way, except I kill it, yank it back
then go somewhere else and yank it again.

Marking both ends seems a little weird.
In Emacs you'd just set the mark at the beginning (or end).
Move the the other end and push the whole thing into the kill
ring ^w
then go where you want it and yank it ^y.

I'm sure both editors do most jobs equally well.

I started with Emacs becuase back in the day
Emacs was more customizable. I'm pretty sure
that advantage is mostly gone.

That's true in vi/vim as well. see second example above.

The problem is that vim undo sometimes moves the cursor,
making the use of '.' problematic in some cases (such
as when iterating through a complicated substitute
command using regular expressions).

Same here. Except I just use ^K to kill the lines.

Well, by default ^k just kills to the end of the line:

(define-key global-map [(kp-add)] 'kill-whole-line)
(define-key global-map [(S-kp-add)] 'yank) ; Shift KP-ADD = YANK

I forgot I had the Shift KP-ADD binding.
My comments say I came up with that in 2014.
For some reason I'm not using it.
I guess it didn't make it into long term memory.
Seems to me like it would be helpful, easy, and intuitive.

Thanks. Just added that using

While vim is very customizable, due to lots of
functionalities, and vimscript, I'm getting the most
from the ability to invoke UNIX commands.

I like to use vanilla vim, without any extension. This
sort of asceticism aims at being able to work with
simpler vi clones, such as the ones you find on
$random_UNIX_flavour.

Yes. And a long time is passed since the days of
editor wars.

Nowadays, what is left of hackerdom has to be defended
against kids with their fancy Christmas-tree editor,
who can live with no knowledge of what's behind the
fancy GUI.

We have to stick together in our citadel, and showing
each other the power of our respective preferred
editors.

	I tend to keep my usage very simple as well, I've been using vi so
long that most routine stuff is reflex so I can think entirely about the
text rather than the process of editing it.

I knew that I was fully acclimated to vi when I tried to move down several

I get a lot of that. After a training course, I had someone ask me: "So
how did you accomplish that?" I couldn't give a straight answer as I
would have had to have the software in front of me to show it.

I didn't find vi all that hard to adapt to, as I'd played Nethack since
it was simply known as HACK back in the 80s.

Yes, I sometimes use position marks too. If my cursor
is positioned at line 90 though, and I have to go up to
line 3, it takes less time to refer to line 3 by
number, instead of moving up for a mark.

When it is more convenient to mark (e.g. I'm already on
the interesting line) I would tipically go for

Oh nice! I didn't know about 'co'. I always use 't',
which is a synonym, anyway.

While this one is clever! I never thought of tac
invocation this way! Thanks for sharing.

To be honest I don't always use bit fields like that,
but I can see other situations where it matters.

On a different yet related topic, are you sure you want
to use bitfields to deal with host endianness? The C
standard doesn't mandate a specific order for the
bitfields, so it might be very compiler/architecture
dependent!

It is compiler dependent. But we only use gcc for this
project and there is no need to use anything else.

This project has a couple million lines of header files
describing control and status registers (generated from
yaml); it's much cleaner and more maintainable to use
the bitfields rather than bitmasks to access the registers.

Each register is defined as a union:

union registername {
    uint64_t   u;
    struct {
#if __BYTE_ORDER == __BIG_ENDIAN
      uint64_t  field3 : 32,
                field2 : 31,
                field1 : 1;
#else
      uint64_t  field1 : 1,
                field2 : 31,
                field3 : 32;
#else
#endif
    } s;
};

registername reg;

reg.s.field2 = x;

is much cleaner and more maintainable than

reg &= ~(0xfffffffe);
reg |= x << 1;

I really miss ISPF on Linux. The PDF editor has a ton of features I haven’t

	Have you ever encountered D ? It's a OO extension of C that is
several orders of magnitude nicer than C++, and therefore almost completely
unused anywhere. Unlike C++ it does not claim or attempt to compile C code,
it just looks a lot like C would if it had been designed as an OO language
in the first place.

As a matter of fact, I did encounter D.

I don't remember much, since I tried to learn it around
10 years ago, but I remember it as a neat language.
Sure, it cannot compile C code, but it is compatible at
binary level, so you can link your C library straight
away.

I really liked it. Too bad that the standard library
was proprietary.

If I recall correctly (I'm too lazy to look it up) the
community came out with another standard library, open
source, completely different and incompatible.

I'm not sure this holds even nowadays, but I believe
this was a huge mistake, and in my opinion what killed
D's popularity in the crib.

Yep D nowadays is a lot different to D a decade ago and
the problems with the libaries are no longer relevant.
I know someone who really likes it - he has mainly used
it for a pet project.
