Had he never seen a player piano?

Good one.

He had a PHD. He sure asked a lot of dumb questions
before he dropped out.

I once saw a PHD new hire get as far as the 3 star prompt
in TSO and leave the terminal in that state all day.

He eventually did learn.

Since I had to drop out of college I always took extra pleasure
in watching the 4.0 average guys struggle along or not be able to
hold his own in a chemistry, math, or physics discussion.

One of the things wrong with modern education is that there is
practically no hands-on with anything. Reading books isn't the same
thing. People with zero aptitude for doing anything but high aptitude
for regurgitating lecture notes can get high grades without ever
actually developing any skill in doing anything.

I stayed in school far too long--I was expecting that next year
they're going to show me how to actually _do_ all this crap and never
got to it.

Wasn't until I got into the real world that I realized how little the
theory I was being taught had to do with engineering as it was
practiced.

That can happen...

First time I ever used a UNIX system (a HP, I remember) I wrote a
short Fortran program (using cat) and wanted to invoke the fortran
compiler, which the book in front of me said was called "fc".
There was a /usr/bin/fc, but that was not what was called...

Of course, that landed me in vi, which I knew nothing about.

Much as I like using vi, I have to admit that it is certainly not
friendly, intuitive or particularly discoverable. How long did it take you
to escape ?

I suspect Thomas is still writing to us from *that* instance of vi.

I didn't, really. By the time I had pressed just about every
key there was, the terminal was in a locked state, to the guy who
showed up to see how we were doing finally had to reset it.

I later actually learned to appreciate vi, and I am typing this
in vim, so it didn't do permanent damage :-)

That's pretty typical IME, I rescued any number of people from
similar situations in the mid 80s when we were supplying XENIX based systems
to racehorse breeders and maintaining them. We gave them Uniplex and Visual
Shell but some people managed to find their way to a command line and even
into vi.

Or an orchestrion? [which typically contained piano, organ,
zylophone, drums, triangles, bells; some had violins or banjos
or accordion]

Fairground organ? Jacquard loom? I evn used to have a bank card with
holes in it, before magnetic strips.

Odd thing is that I work for one of the largest companies in the
business but I have never felt like I was considered an interchangeable

You're very fortunate.

One thing I've seen over the years is that companies change.

Sadly, sometimes that is for the worse. Sometimes a once
progressive outfit that treats it people well has a change
in attitude--maybe it's bought out, maybe a new mgmt team
takes over, whatever--and the goodwill goes out the window.

I know of multiple examples. One reason mega mergers are bad.

It depends on what you do. Our IT is being treated as an
interchangeable part and many of the parts are being interchanged with
parts in India. Fortunately I'm not in IT.

BTDTGTS (been there, done that, got the scars).
My wife is going through it right now at her POE.

I call it "management by invasion".

We took over another insurance company about 30 years back. The
person two levels up the chain of command came from there. So did the
one before him who just retired. I wish that some of them had made it
a little further up the food chain.

No IBM systems, but I’ve worked with some that were pretty nice.

Actually, you can. Run Hercules and OS or DOS, and they’ll run just fine. I
think native MicroFocus COBOL (whatever it’s called now) is pretty close to
the IBM version.

Same here. I worked for CTG when it was still Marx-Baer in Buffalo, and we
did a lot of business replacing tab or 1401 systems with
written-from-scratch 360 DOS COBOL.

And there's GNU COBOL.

But how compatible is that with IBM COBOL? And then there's the whole
CICS issue.
