I wrote a little Javascript and never found a problem, but, as you say, I
probably only used a subset of features.

I didn't mean to slam Perl, I just came to think of that passage in the
perl man page. But yes, it's pretty unfashionable these days.

That's my approach as well, though I more often find myself writing
Python these days (unless shell script is better suited).

Yes, I moved into the Python camp too.
But I believe shell scripts are a trap.

I won't do anything in shell that I think has a chance of growing
into something more complex.

Same here. But I use REXX instead.

I can understand your point of view. It just feels awkward to use Perl
or Python for something that's mainly about calling lots of external
programs. (It can be done, of course, just feels kind of unnatural.)

I believe I mentioned a work sample I recently provided a prospective
employer with, specced as a bash oneliner. It was about finding files
with identical contents and turning them into hard links to save disk
space. That's definitely not something I would have done in bash or any
other shell in the real world. I ended up with something like a 1.3 kB
line.

They seemed happy with the result, though now I've not heard from them
in a while. Oh well, I've got a lot of other feelers out.

One of the beauties of Perl is the huge number of packages.
Often when I had to invoke some kind of shell command I'd instead find
a package that did the same thing more naturally.

Wow, a Linux job instead of the more common Windows job.

I see a lot of them too - now FreeBSD jobs they're rather rarer,
but I have one in an extremely large company.

My rule of thumb: if it needs a hash table, stop using
a shell.

But seriously, the tricky part is error checking, and
that's also what most noobs get wrong.

This is sensible, of course the crystal ball fails on occasion, at
which point I usually switch to Python rather than complicate the shell
script.

OTOH shql is very very impressive as a tour de farce.

The entire FreeBSD build system, and ports system for the most part
is written in make - there's about 10k lines of library files written in
make in /usr/share/mk/ on any FreeBSD system.

I fought with makefiles and hated them until I realized I didn't have
to fight with each vendors version of Make and I could install gnumake
everywhere including Windows.

Thare are a few simple patterns you can use in makefile that let you do
everything you need:

target: depend1 depend2
       commands

Then with all Gnumake's string manipulation 5subst, $filter-out, you're golden.

Which is a pity, given that Perl has probably the best
documentation you will find around. I love the
convention of having manpages with SYNOPSIS for every
single module!

Damn kids don't understand the advantage of not having
to google for documentation!.

Btw, in Python you have to avoid stupid things too. I
bet you don't use __operator__ __overloading__ that
often, do you? :)

Of course. No language will entirely save you from stupidity.

Can't say I do, no. Sounds like a good way to make an unreadable mess; I
remember that from my days of fooling around with C++.

Nope and I see more and more Python new features that
I read about and then vow to avoid.

There is one OO feature that should be used sparingly and
judiciously, it can be very handy when used well but it is a really good
way to make code that doesn't do what it says on the tin.
