I think your friend should contact that agency and ask them to explain why Verizon continues to have that monopoly. Seven days sounds ridiculous to me unless there are extenuating circumstances - a storm in the area for example.

I called AT&T, they told me to call Yahoo. I called Yahoo, they told me to call AT&T. I called AT&T back. They said that they'd come check the line but if they didn't find anything wrong with it I'd have to pay. They needed to make an appointment a week ahead. They did not show. I called them again. This time they gave me what they claimed was a firm date for the repair. The date came and went and no repair. I called them again and asked if the repair had been performed. They told me their computers were down and they couldn't tell me. I told them that my next call was to Cox and that if they didn't have my phone fixed by the time Cox arrived, they could kiss my business good-bye. 3 days later I was up and running on Cox high speed cable.

I had the buzz problem, too. The ATT fixit guy did come out but I wouldn't let him inside the house and suggested that he check the junction box (is that the correct name?) first. The wire pairs were out of sync caused by years of seeping water. Problem response times to copper problems are getting longer and longer as less and less people have them. ATT wants the Michigan legislature to allow it to drop copper from the regulations. It will happen. /BAH

It will happen. Verizon wants to drop copper. Actually, in some areas it is dropping it, forcing subscribers onto FIOS. Our neighborhood has a problem--we do not have FIOS, so we're screwed.

In my area we have Comcast that provides telephone, TV, and digital. Unfortunately, their reliability and customer service is worse than Verizon. It seems that both companies are in a race to the bottom. For instance, Comcast claimed my cable payment check bounced, and they charged me all sorts of penalty fees. But in fact the check did not bounce. Despite documentation, getting them to believe it and credit my account was a real pain.

Verizon is essentially deregulated. There still is a state regulatory commission, but they no longer serve the public. In our state (and probably others), it is now extremely difficult for an individual citizen to file a complaint. Our water is supplied by a regulated private company. They have big rate increases every year. A neighbor did a financial analysis and felt the increases were totally unjustified. He prepared a detailed report and sent it to the regulators as well as numerous local politicians. No one even bothered to reply.

They're deregulated, and yet the states still protect the cable companies from EEEVIL municipalities that would like to socialistically provide their citizens with better Internet service than the local cable company chooses to make available. Looking at the complaints of the municipal broadband contingent they seem to be making mountains of molehills. Their real objection seems to be that those stupid voters just refuse to see things their way.
