That must have been fun when writing recursive subroutines or re-entrant code (e.g. calling subroutines from interrupt handlers)... My first experience studying the architecture of a larger system was with the Burroughs B7700. This system was completely stack oriented, with display registers for algol compatible variable scope.

It was! In those days I didn't have access to a PDP-8 (I do now) but I did a lot of work on a DDP-516 (including modifying the CPU). Its been a long time, but IIRC she said that when you started a program MCP spun up a virtual machine to suit it, so Algol 60 programs ran in a stack-based VM with memory organised in words, while COBOL programs got byte-addressed memory and a simpler stack, possibly holding little more than subroutine return addressses, and, for all I know, using BCD arithmetic rather than integers: that would certainly map nicely onto the way COBOL defines storage for numeric data. The Harris chips (used much later, e.g. in the DECmate) did have some stack instructions (PPC, PAC, POP, RTN etc.) -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Store the return address in the first word of the subroutine. This was a perfect system as there was no ROM, only core in those days. The ravages of time means I no longer can remember the Octal for the bootloader. I used to be able to toggle it in without thinking.

Then you'd return with "jmp @myret" ISTR. I thought I still had some manuals and tapes but they had been lost before I last moved house 16 years back. I forgot I'd looked for them so I could donate them to a museum. It all starts to come back to me now. Well it's 33 years since I last used one. One for those people who study how memory (human) works... if I sat at the front panel and was given the first few words of the bootloader, would it come back to me?

The PDP-8 I started programming on sure didn't. If you wanted to do that, you had to store the accumulator into memory and use that location as an indirect address. >THat is what a program counter or stack pointer does. Stack pointer?
