But not all processors have had stack pointers, not all processors have had index registers, and the PC can't be used to access data in a useful way (at least for arrays, I am aware of the PDP-11 etc.). One of the more successful early CPUs did not have an index register, did not have a stack pointer, and had no way of using the PC to access data. The multiply/divide option (it was expensive and I never used it) provided a third MQ register. It had indirect addressing, but we all knew the difference between that and index registers. The earlier and much more expensive PDP-6 had 36 bit words, 16 registers, indirect and indexed addressing, and instructions that let you use any register as a stack pointer. The later PDP-10 was better known and had nearly the same instruction set as the PDP-6.

I'd be thinking at least a 80486 for that much load, but there was a 80286 based XENIX machine made by Altos with twenty serial ports and I've seen one (OK I installed it) fully loaded with terminals (15), printers (4) and a modem (some terminals also had printers hanging off their secondary ports).
