The Tolkien Estate was never going to come after a free, public domain computer
program. The Wumpus went in because (a) "Hunt the Wumpus" was very popular
just at that time on the UChicago campus, only $DEITY knows why, and (2) AFAIR,
Dave simply didn't like LotR.

Well, to be pedantic,[1] Will Crowther's game was based on a real world
cave. The addition of fantasy features like the Balrog was (mostly) down
to Don Woods. The extension of the map beyond the Mammoth Cave system is
due to Dave Long.
If Crowther's original Adventure had given a nod to HtW, or even if the
Crowther/Woods fantasy variant had included the Wumpus _ab origine_, I'd
agree with you. Given the actual history, I sincerely doubt that any such
thing was in Dave's mind.

The translation is from the frontispiece to "A Free Enquiry Into the Vulgarly Recieved Notion of Nature" by Robert Boyle. John Savard

The Latin is itself a translation, Galen having originally written in Greek; I came across one source for that particular translation as a quote from Sennertus. John Savard

Thank you. I tried a number of translation sites, but none
worked.

That did wonders in making people accustomed to the keyboard, screen, command parser etc; as well as actually reading what the computer told you. This lasted as far as the first computer assignment in any course was distributed, usually towards the beginning of the second week. Otherwise load had to be below 1.2, or it had to be outside 0700-2000 (0900-1500 Saturdays) or Sundays for Play to allow anyone in. Around 6000 people got their first real exposure to computing through the pdp10 games. -- mrr

It's a great way to get kids to train themselves. It also gives the computer center an idea of the loads they're going to have for the semester. > > This lasted as far as the first computer assignment in any course > was distributed, usually towards the beginning of the second week. > > Otherwise load had to be below 1.2, or it had to be outside 0700-2000 > (0900-1500 Saturdays) or Sundays for Play to allow anyone in. > > Around 6000 people got their first real exposure to computing through > the pdp10 games. The DC72 was thoroughly tested because its developer spent his time playing games. /BAH

In "The Soul of a New Machine" is related how Adventure was used
to test the new machine.

It would test load and terminal I/O. I'd also have a non-sharable FOROTS for a while to test scheduling and memory. There wasn't much disk I/O so that wouldn't be stress tested. /BAH

I don't have an attitude problem.
If you have a problem with my attitude, that's your problem.
