When I left I had to store them in boxes at home, but at least they're grouped and the boxes labeled. SWMBO keeps trying to have me get rid of them. I have those pretty well sorted out. There are three sets of bookshelves for those: - one right next to me here, with the stuff I use a lot (many O'Reilly books) - one on the other side of the 'office' - one next door Books migrate between parts of this one-lecvel store! None are catalogued. Older tech books are in a storage unit ten miles away - but they are sorted into crates, and in the database (treating each crate as a bookshelf) -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... So, once the debugger detects that the program being debugged has halted, it can fetch the program counter and map that to the exact source line (modulo optimization) and source file corresponding to that instruction. Likewise, it can step a source-code-statement by using that metadata to determine which instruction starts the next statement and setting a breakpoint on that instruction.

Only the text, data, rodata and bss sections are mapped into the address space. The remaining sections remain on disk only, and are only accessed by the debugger (which is a separate process in its own address space using a kernel interface to control the debugged process address space).

To use source-level debugging you have to have the executable, and the matching source available.

The debug options to the compiler can embed references to every source line into the ".exe". Plus lots of symbols, stack frames, structure info etc. No reverse compiles. The source references are directly to the source code, so that will have to be available. The standard incantations is "-g3 -ggdb" to have debugging level 3, and have all the gdb tags included. Or you can look directly at the object code. For production code you normally have -O2 -g0; i.e. optimization level 2 and no debugging symbols. -- mrr
